Glenn Walker Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Townson-Rose Funeral Home - Hayesville on Dec. 12, 2025.
On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025, our brother, Glenn Hartley Walker, age 92, peacefully passed away. His new residence in in the Kingdom of Heaven. Hartley was born in Harrisburg, PA on 07/12/1933. He was the first child of Glenn Suder and Mary Elizabeth Hartley Walker. Twin boys, David Edward and Donald Phillip, arrived in 1935. Our mother said she felt she needed to even up the family. Their first daughter, Mollie-Rae, was born in 1938. Seventeen months later, twin girls, Joanne and Susanne were born. Our mother had six children in seven years.

The Walker family bought a chicken farm in Somerset County, PA, and learned all about how to raise 3000 chickens. They also had a cow and pigs, and grew all their fruits and vegetables for the dining room table, in a huge garden. Hartley didn't like enjoy farming.

Soon after high school graduation, in 1952, he enlisted in the army. This was seven years after WWII ended, he was stationed in post-war Japan. He served for three years. After the Army released him, Hartley joined the Air Force. While there, he served as a Morse Code Intercept Operator from 1956 through 1965.

After his Air Force discharge, Hartley settled in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and became a mailman for the United States Postal Service. During his post office experience, he was selected to receive the Postman of the Year Award. It helped that he adored cats. When he found a stray or injured cat, while on his mail route, he took it to a veterinarian for care, and made sure the cat was placed in a good home.

Hartley never married. When his working years were completed, Hartley settled in Hamlet, NC near his brother Donald. They were lifelong friends. They spent many years living in Hamlet's wooded countryside, enjoying the fresh country air and watching football. They enjoyed each other's company.

When brother Don got ill, Hartley moved into the Hamlet House Assisted Living. He resided there for nearly three years. He and his family are grateful for the excellent end of Life Nursing Care he was given at Hamlet House.

Graveside service will be held December 8, 2025 in the Hayesville First United Methodist Cemetery with Pastor Kurt Hatherly officiating.
