Glenna Petersen Obituary

Our sweet Mother, Grandma, Great-Grandma, sister, and friend passed away peacefully in Smithfield, Utah at the age of 89 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease, which she approached with quiet reluctance and dignity. The disease took her energy and strength, but was not able to take her gentle way and her laughter, even after she could no longer communicate with words.

Glenna was born in Logan, Utah, on January 21, 1937 to Sidney Devere and Edries Nelson Hansen and grew up in Newton, Utah with her three sisters - Elaine, Carma, and Doris and one brother - Ramon, all of whom she loved very much. Her father was a farmer in Newton and Idaho, and while growing up she pulled rye, cared for the garden and picked beans (for 2.5 cents per pound!). Her first job was with her Dad, he paid her 25 cents to lie down on the seat of the car and go to sleep while he farmed! She went to school in Newton, Richmond, graduated from North Cache High School, and attended BYU.

She married Leon Blanchard Petersen on April 26, 1957 in the Logan Temple. They were blessed with five children. They made their home in Newton until they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, then returned home to Newton eleven years later - where Glenna lived for almost forty years. In her later life she moved to North Logan, most recently to Maple Springs and then to Birch Creek where the loving staffs took such kind care of her and for which the family is profoundly grateful. She was very ready to go when the time came, and looked forward to being welcomed to heaven by loved ones who have preceded her.

Glenna had a kind heart and loved to serve others. She impacted many lives as she served in numerous callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including the Primary, Young Women's, and Relief Society. She served as a missionary in her ward and at the Church Office Building in SLC, where she reviewed missionary applications. Glenna was known for her love of and testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which burned in her heart through the end of her life. She loved to help anyone and everyone, and always lifted those with whom she had the opportunity to serve. Glenna enjoyed spending time in the temple and attended as long as it was physically possible for her.

She had many musical abilities, played piano, organ, and accordion, led choirs, and was honored to sing in General Conference choirs twice. She was an excellent cook and seamstress; she loved to knit, crochet, cross stitch, and quilt, and her children and grandchildren were recipients of her beautiful creations. She will be missed dearly by her family, but her testimony and example of quiet dignity will live on in our hearts.

Glenna is preceded in death by her husband Leon, parents, brother Ramon, sister Elaine, brother-in-law Orrin, and son-in-law Lyle. She is survived by her children Tacy, Shelly, Layne (Kelly), Kurt (Patti), and Carla (Mike); thirteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and sisters Carma (Joe), and Doris (Dave). She was a devoted mother who taught her family lessons of love, faith, generosity, integrity, and thrift. Glenna and Leon provided their children with a wonderful childhood full of adventures and trips, and were great parents.

I knew Glenna from Maple Springs. I am happy for her reunion in heaven with her Heaven Father, her Savior, her husband, other family members and friends. For those who loved her and remain on this earth, I send my sympathy at this bitter sweet time.
