Gloria Markell Obituary

Born on September 8, 1933, in Corning, NY, Gloria was the daughter of Ernest and Helen (Dininny) Knapp. On February 10, 1951, she married the love of her life, Claude Markell, and together they built a life full of warmth, laughter, and devotion.
Gloria was known for her generous heart, her love of cooking, and her exceptional baking skills. For many years, she worked in the bakery at Miniers Super Market in Big Flats, where her baked goods were beloved by all who had the pleasure of enjoying them. But beyond her culinary talents, it was Glorias compassion and nurturing spirit that made her truly special. She was a devoted animal lover, always caring for and protecting the creatures in her life, and she was a source of endless love and support to her family.
Gloria will be deeply missed by her children: Sharlene Smith of Horseheads, Donald Markell of TN, and Donna (Lou) Peek of Painted Post. She is also survived by her eleven cherished grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of her life.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Gloria was predeceased by her son, Raymond Markell; son-in-law, James Smith; daughter-in-law, Sheri Markell; grandson, David Herritt; and sister, Teresa Marold.
A graveside service was held at Rural Home Cemetery in Big Flats on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at 2:00pm. All are welcome to join in remembering a remarkable woman whose love will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Maple Creek for her excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Glorias memory to the Finger Lakes SPCA, 72 Cameron St, Bath, NY 14810.
