Gloria N. Nangle
August 10, 2024 Resided in Greenville, RI
SMITHFIELD – Gloria N. Nangle, 92, formerly of Appletown Road, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. Married to William P. Nangle for 65 years, Gloria was born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Luigi B. and Rose A. (LaJoie) Marcolivio. She lived in Greenville for 56 years, previously living in Cranston.
Gloria enjoyed a remarkable life and her passion for helping others would leave an indelible mark on those she came in contact with. Gloria and Bill met at a Mt. Pleasant High School St. Patrick's Day dance when she was 16, the connection was instant. Gloria graduated from Mt. Pleasant High in 1950 where she served as the President of the Journalism Society. Upon graduating, Gloria would go on to work for the telephone Company, soon to be AT&T. They would marry in 1953 and raised six children. Since that first dance in 1948, Gloria and Bill would share a 71-year love story that many admired and aspired to.
In 1968, Bill and Gloria settled their family in Smithfield and in 1972 she accepted a position with Rally Point Racquet Club spanning 25 years managing the club's court scheduling, tournament bookings and would later manage the club's first pro shop. Gloria would be by Bill's side volunteering her time late into the evenings supporting Bill's vision for developing a first-class recreation program for the families and youth of Smithfield until his retirement 22 years later. Gloria also volunteered her time assisting with the Girl Scouts, the Raiders Youth Football program, Smithfield's first bike club and the Smithfield Junior Hockey Association among other youth programs.
Of all of their accomplishments, Bill and Gloria's passion remained their family of six children, seventeen grandchildren and soon to be twenty-six great grandchildren. Bill and Gloria spent summers with the family camping the east coast from Maine to Florida, boating area lakes and Lake Winnipesaukee and skiing the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Gloria was an active member of St. Philip's Parish, an avid New England sports fan and she and Bill enjoyed spending winters playing golf in Florida and traveling the US and abroad together.
Gloria is survived by her six children: Patricia R. Charland and her husband Dennis of North Scituate, Kathleen L. Almonte and her husband Ernest of Smithfield, William P. Nangle Jr. and his wife Tracey of Smithfield, Robert T. Nangle and his wife Judith of Chepachet, Thomas E. Nangle and his wife Kathleen of Greenville and Maureen A. Nangle of Lincoln and her 17 grandchildren, all of whom loved and cared for their Grandmother and soon to be 26 great grandchildren and growing. Gloria was the loving sister of Armand LaPlant, Arthur LaPlant, Florence LaPlant, Anthony Marcolivio, Vickie Marcolivio and Agnes (Marcolivio) Bourdeau.
The family extends its appreciation to the employees at The Village at Waterman Lake, Dr. James Hedde, DO, and HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center of Providence for the care and compassion they showed our Mother and Nana.
