Gordon (Gordy) H. Gilbert, 83, Burlington, Vermont passed away unexpectedly following a brief illness on Monday, November 18, 2024
He was born on June 9, 1941, in Hardwick, Vermont, the youngest son of six children of Ernest W. and Cordelia (Cyr) Gilbert. He attended Nazareth School K-6, Edmond's Junior High 7-8, and was a graduate of Burlington High School, class of 1959, and Burlington College with his Associates of Arts in 1990. On June 24, 1961 he was married in Burlington to Margaret (Peg) E. Riley. Early in life, he was employed by Joe's Stop N Shop, Grand Union Co., Durkee Spice Co., and Martin's (Hannaford) Supermarket. He joined the Burlington Police Department in 1970 and retired with the rank of Sergeant in 1998. He was the first motorcycle training officer for the department and also worked on awareness campaigns, including McGruff. Following his retirement he worked at Blodgett Oven Company and went on to become co-owner of Class Centre Mini Storage in Milton. Gordy delighted in times spent with family, celebrating holidays, assembling puzzles, gardening, Winters in Florida, baseball, vending at car shows and swap meets where he had many close friends, and had a great love for rabbits. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Cordelia Gilbert, his sisters Roberta Lacroix and Mae (Joseph) Riley, his brothers, Ernest (Buddy), and Lee Gilbert.
He is survived by his wife Margaret (Peg) of 63 years, and their children Christopher, Jeffrey, Catherine (Suzi) Bailey (Tyler Audette), Stephanie (Stephen) Martin and grandchildren, Jon Gilbert (Melissa), Joseph Gilbert, Margaret (Maggie) Satink, James Gilbert, Emily Martin, Giovanni Costantini, and Cameron Martin, his great grandson, Caleb Gilbert, his brother Lloyd Gilbert, in laws Donald Lacroix and Nancy Gilbert, several adored nieces, nephews and friends, including the neighborhood boys who called him Mr. G.
Visiting Hours will be Sunday, November 24th from 2 to 5 pm at Ready Funeral Home 261 Shelburne Road in Burlington. A Catholic Mass at Saint Mark's Parish on North Avenue in Burlington will be held on Monday, November 25th at 11:00 am, with burial immediately following at New Mount Calvary Cemetery Plattsburg Avenue in Burlington. The family would be honored if you joined in a gathering in celebration of Gordy's Life immediately following at Holy Cross Church Church Road in Colchester.
