Gordon William "Bill" Hunter

Gordon William "Bill" Hunter, a spirited Major League Baseball player, coach, and manager, and longtime resident of Lutherville, Maryland, passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 97. Known for his flashy glove, deep baseball knowledge, and enduring love for the game, Bill's career left a lasting impact at every level of the sport.
Born in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948 and made his Major League debut with the St. Louis Browns in 1953. Over his MLB career, he played 630 games with the Browns, Orioles, Yankees, Athletics, and Indians, and was selected to the 1953 American League All-Star team.
Following his playing days, Bill coached third base for the Baltimore Orioles from 1964 to 1977, contributing to two World Series championships and four AL pennants. He later managed the Texas Rangers for two seasons before joining Towson University as head baseball coach in 1979. He went on to serve as the university's athletic director until his retirement in 1995.
He was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1996, and into the Towson University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania Athletic Halls of Fame in 1997. His legacy lives on in the many players, students, and colleagues he mentored and inspired.
Bill is survived by his wife of 76 years, Beverly; two sons, Greg of Timonium, MD, and Kevin and his wife, Virginia (Ginny), of Grimesland, NC; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many close family friends.
Services and interment private.
