Spencer- Gordon G. Leao, 85, of Spencer, passed unexpectedly on Thursday August 11, 2022. Gordon was born on July 11, 1937, to Alfred G. Leao and Pauline (Mans) of Brookfield.
He grew up on Kimball St. in Brookfield and resided in Spencer his entire adult life. He leaves his wife of sixty-five years, Doris M. (Tallman) Leao; two daughters, Deborah Spink of Spencer and Dawn King of Gilbertville, a granddaughter, Allison (King) Hartshorn and her husband Kyle of Gilbertville, a grandson, Jonathan Spink of Worcester, a great-grandson, Jacoby Hartshorn of Gilbertville, a sister, Janeth Selter of Sheridan, CA, two nieces, Rebecca Leao and Linda Raymond, three nephews, George, Bruce, and Scott Selter. He is predeceased by two brothers, John and Gerald Leao.
Gordon served in the U.S. Navy as a young man. He was a machinist by trade and worked many years for Curtis & Marble and then Flexcon, until he retired in 2002. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for the town of Spencer for over thirty years and was President of Spencer Little League for several years. He became an avid runner with the Central Mass Striders at the age of forty and ran in many races and marathons. He was still running on his treadmill at the age of eighty-five. He was a member of the Order of Mason's for over fifty years and was an active member of Hayden Lodge until his death. He was also an active member of the First Congregational Church of Spencer right up until his passing. In the years after his retirement, he became an avid gardener and was renowned for his green thumb at Howe Village. He lived a life of devotion to his family, many friends, and his faith in God and humanity.
The family plans to hold a private service at their future convenience. Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., in West Brookfield is assisting his family with arrangements.
