RUTLAND - Gordon Matheson passed away suddenly at his home in Rutland, March 7, 2023. He was born in Springfield, MA November 11, 1942, to the late Malcolm and Mabel Matheson.
He graduated from Olivet College in Michigan and went on to earn a master's degree and CAGS from Assumption and a doctorate from U. Mass Amherst. He taught middle school in Sterling for five years and then had a 38-year career as a Professor of Psychology at Worcester State University where he was a popular and inspirational teacher as well as active in college government and union activities.
Dr. Matheson and his wife Joline were inseparable companions, and after retirement they traveled the world, visiting more than 100 countries. He particularly loved New Zealand, the historic European capital cities, and the American Southwest. He never lost his love of learning and recently took great interest in local history. He also was a Boston Bruins fan. A charismatic personality he made friends world-wide. He will be remembered as a marvelous storyteller with a brilliant mind and great sense of humor.
He is survived by his beloved wife Joline; his three sons, Gordon Matheson Jr. of Chatsworth, CA, Darin Jones and his wife Crystina of Reston, VA, and Erin Jones and his wife Rochelle of Leesburg, VA; one brother, James Matheson and his wife Barbara of Holden; and two sisters, Jean Smith of Tulsa, OK, and Carol Stafford and her husband Gene of Jacksonville, FL. He also leaves granddaughter Sharaya Gallozzi and her husband Adam and their son Grayson; grandson Malcolm Matheson of Baltimore, and grandson Colin Jones of Leesburg, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A private memorial is planned for later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to doctorswithoutborders.org.
Arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home in Holden.
