Gordon Schildgen Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon W. Schildgen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who passed away surrounded by his loving family on October 3, 2025, at the age of 82.
Born on May 6, 1943, Gordon lived a life defined by quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and boundless love for his family and friends. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, embodying the values of honor, duty, and loyalty that he carried throughout his life.
Gordon began his career as an accountant, later establishing a long and respected career as comptroller at General Packaging Products, Inc. Throughout his professional life, he was known for his integrity and precision as well as his warmth, humor, and kindness.
Known for his love of family, Gordon found joy in simple, meaningful moments - especially those spent with loved ones. He cherished his time in Michigan, where he could often be found behind the wheel of his pontoon boat, out fishing with his sons or grandsons, or simply enjoying the beauty of the water and the sound of laughter from family and friends. Those peaceful days on the lake were among his happiest, creating lasting memories and cherished traditions that will live on in the hearts of all who shared them.
Gordon was a devoted husband to Katie Schildgen, with whom he shared 56 years of love and partnership. He was the proud father of Cindy (Mick) Crosby, Scott (Joni) Schildgen, Kathi (Ed) Tannhauser, Karen (Aaron) Spencer, Michael (Katie) Schildgen, loving grandfather of Jack (Riley) and Sarah Crosby, Tim and Nikki Schildgen, Abby, Leah, Ryan and Mark Tannhauser, Tyler (Ana), Jordyn, and Jake Spencer, Gabriel and Grace Schildgen, cherished great-grandfather to Ellie Spencer, and cherished brother of Kenn (Sandi) Schildgen, Joyce (Brian) Willis, the late Betty Preiwisch, the late Donald (Mary Lou) Schildgen, the late Joan (the late Clem) Preiwisch, the late Dale (the late Joyce) Schildgen. He was also a treasured uncle and a lifelong friend to many.
His presence was a steady and comforting one - a man who could be counted on in every way. Whether offering sage advice, sharing a quiet moment by the lake, or telling a well-timed joke, Gordon made those around him feel supported and loved. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in the family he loved so dearly and the countless lives he touched.
In honor of Gordon's remarkable life, a visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Modell Funeral Home, 7710 South Cass Ave., Darien IL. Friends and family are invited to return to the funeral home on Wednesday, October 8, 2025 for additional visiting hours from 8:45 a.m. - 9:45 a.m.. Prayers will begin at 9:45 a.m. followed by a procession to Christ the Servant Church for Mass at 10:30 a.m. A private interment at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to American Legion Post 80 (Downers Grove) and VFW Post 2838 (Darien), in honor of Gordon's memory.
