Gordon Strachan Obituary

Gordon D. Strachan, 95, of Dawsonville, Ga, formerly of Irwin, died Sunday Dec. 1, 2024. He was born June 7, 1929 in Cleveland, Oh, a son of the late Alexander William and Margaret (Watt) Strachan and was also preceded in death by his wife Barbara A. (Underwood) Strachan and brother and sister Robert Strachan and Helen Smith. Gordon was a graduate of Monongahela High School and Washington & Jefferson College where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was an Air Force veteran serving with the Strategic Air Command during the Korean Conflict. He retired as Director of Human Resources at Westmoreland County Community College. Gordon was a former active member of First Presbyterian Church, Irwin, serving as an Elder, President of the Corporation, Treasurer, and many other duties. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Johnstown Presbyterian Home, served two terms as president of the Irwin Lions Club, and was a member of the Wisemans' Club of the WMCA. He loved golf, yardwork, reading, and music. In his later years he loved traveling with his sons and their families on new adventures and using his iPhone to keep connected to his family and the world. He exemplified his life theme of "attitude is the difference". He is survived by his sons Rev. Dr. Robert D. Strachan and his wife Paulette of Dawsonville, Ga., and William C. Strachan and his wife Annmarie of Virginia; his grandchildren Ben Strachan, Hannah Williams (Scott), Sarah Bender (Josh), William Strachan, Jack Cherry (Brittany), Alaina Hartline (Meghan), and Greg Cherry; and his great grandchildren Sally Mae Strachan, Rebecca Ann Strachan, Isaiah Strachan, Luke Williams, and Ashlynn Williams. Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, at the WILLIAM SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 521 Main St., Irwin. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, in the funeral home, with Rev. Doug Rehberg, officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, North Huntingdon. Gordon and Barb were dear people. Cheryl and Gordon served together on a pastor search committee at church and became friends. He will be missed by family and friends. Truly a good man. God Bless.
