Grace was born on April 13, 1929, in Bradshaw, WV, the daughter of Leonard and Sarah Davis Baldwin. She graduated from Iaeger High School in the Class of 1948 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in teaching at Bluefield State College while raising her family.
Outside of her professional and personal life, Grace enjoyed a variety of hobbies. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse and finished her career after 32 years at Southside K8 School in War, WV. After retirement, she found joy in boating at Smith Mountain Lake and traveling.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband Robert (Bobby) Hammond, her companion Ralph Dotson, her brothers Ira Vance and Roman Vance, 2 step-sisters, sisters-in-law June (James) Justice and Shirlee Scott, brothers-in-law Henry Hammond and Sam Hammond, and nephews Donnie Hammond and Tim Justice.
Grace cherished her family deeply. She is survived by her son Doug Hammond, her daughter Linda and husband Fred Stinson, her grandchildren Robert Stinson and companion Crystal, Tiffany Stinson Fielder and husband Mark, and her great-grandson Andrew and wife Melody Fielder. She is also survived by her brother-in-law James (Jimmy) Hammond, nieces Sherri (Lindsey) Grubb Scott, Donna Hammond, Debbie, Maryann, Kim Justice, and Stephanie (Steve) Berry, nephews Mark Justice, Anthony (Veronica) Scott, and John (Donna) Hammond, and a host of other family and friends.
Grace will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love and devotion will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in War, West Virginia on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 12:00 PM – Noon with Fred (Buddy) Stinson officiating. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Bluewell, West Virginia. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
