Grace Virginia (Selvey) Moon, 93, of Monterey, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2024 at her home.
Mrs. Moon was born August 24, 1930 in Rutherford County, North Carolina, the daughter of the late John Loftus and Virginia (Henderson) Selvey. Her late husband, James W. Moon, who predeceased her in 1984, was Principal of Highland County High School and subsequently Superintendent of Middlesex County Schools.
She was a graduate of Gardner-Webb College, North Carolina and continued her education with graduate studies at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Moon began her teaching career in Highland County, and later taught in Westmoreland County, Buchanan County, and Middlesex County Schools. She was active in civic, church, and community affairs, and after retirement served as a volunteer in Middlesex County Schools. She also served on the Special Education Board of Middlesex County and on the Middlesex County Library Board.
She devoted considerable time to the James W. Moon Scholarships at Middlesex County and Highland County Schools and the Middlesex Library thrift store. She enjoyed reading, gardening, walking, and receiving cards and visits from her many friends, family, and former students. Mrs. Moon always said she “enjoyed the best of both worlds, the mountains of Highland County and the waters of Middlesex.”
Mrs. Moon is survived by three children, Marilyn Pascale and husband, Charles of Harrisonburg, James W. Moon Jr. and wife, Beverly of Forest City, N.C., and Debbie Platt and husband, James of Church View; four grandsons, Sean Fletcher, and Jason Fletcher, both of Rockingham County, Nicholas Vandyke of Urbanna, and James W. Moon III of Forest City, N.C.; as well as five great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.
The family would like to thank Mrs. Moon’s many friends, caretakers, and neighbors, including Mary and Don Dowdy, Cappie Hull, Helen Vinson, Misty Goodbar, Dorothy Lightner, Jeanie Whitecotton, John and Ann Kilgallen, and Loy and Bonnie Harvey, to mention just a few.
Per Mrs. Moon’s wishes, her remains were cremated, and a private inurnment will be held at a later date.
