Obituary of Grace Mary Nortman
Grace Mary Nortman, age 71, of Plainfield since 1998, and formerly of Chicago, passed away unexpectedly on October 28, 2022 at home.
Born October 30, 1950 in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Grace (Miller) Fiore. She was raised in the Marquette Park/West Lawn neighborhood, where her Italian ancestry and Catholic heritage were important parts of her life, as well as her membership in St. Adrian Church and community.
She married the love of her life, Sterling Mark Nortman, in 1969 and they enjoyed many happy years of marriage until his passing in 2020. They made their family home in the same two-flat at 72nd and Richmond where Grace was raised, which was in close proximity to where Grace's father worked for the railroad.
She demonstrated her abilities as an amazing artist at an early age and was accepted to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before deciding to enroll in St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing and to pursue a career in nursing.
Grace worked in the Pediatrics unit at Christ Hospital for a number of years. Being well known and strongly connected to her community, she then began working for her Alderman and serving in various capacities in the Ward office, and working on numerous political campaigns. She later loved working retail in the bridal fashion industry, for Marie's Bridal Boutique and Eva's Bridal Shop.
Grace will be remembered as an amazing wife, mother and grandmother who was loving and caring, had a positive attitude, and saw good in everyone. She loved to travel, try new foods, and was always open to new ideas. She imparted her curious personality on her children, exposing them to new cultures and new experiences.
She is survived by her loving children, Tom Nortman of Homewood, Lisa (Bob) Lopez of Crown Point, IN, and Cheryl (Bryan) Greenspan of St. Charles; and her adoring grandchildren, Tori, Tara, David (Juliana), Bryan, Christopher, Michele, Jake, and Nicholas
Visitation for Grace Nortman will be held Sunday, November 6, 2022 from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m., at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet. Graveside services will be held Monday, November 7, 2022 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Cemetery, Evergreen Park, IL.
