Mr. Gradlin D. Thompson, Sr., age 64, of Florence, South Carolina, peacefully entered eternal rest on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

Born on April 23, 1961, in Florence, South Carolina, he was the beloved son of Rev. William Levi Thompson and Geneva Eagleton Thompson. Affectionately known by family and friends as “Shay,” he was raised in a loving and close-knit family, where he learned the importance of faith, perseverance, and compassion—principles that guided him throughout his life. He graduated from South Florence High School, Class of 1979, where he formed lasting friendships and built the foundation for his lifelong dedication to hard work and service.

A man of strong work ethic, laughter, and quiet determination, Gradlin proudly retired from United Parcel Service (UPS) after 39 years of dedicated service, where he was admired for his reliability, integrity, and leadership. In addition to his long and distinguished career at UPS, he was a longtime Barber Instructor at the family-owned Thompson Barber College. He also barbered for many years at Thompson’s Master Hair Care, where his skill, professionalism, and friendly spirit made him a favorite among clients and colleagues alike. Through both his work and mentorship, he inspired generations of barbers and helped carry forward his family’s proud tradition in the trade.

Gradlin shared meaningful years with Susie S. Thompson, and together they were blessed with one son, Gradlin D. Thompson, Jr. He took immense pride in being a father and grandfather, cherishing every moment spent with his grandson, Christian Thompson, who brought him endless joy and laughter.

Outside of work, Gradlin had a true passion for cooking — a gift he shared generously with family and friends. His meals were made with both skill and heart, and his kitchen was often filled with laughter, warmth, and good food. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, proudly cheering on his team through every season with unwavering loyalty.

He is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Sheldon (Deborah) Thompson, Garcia (Rev. George) Washington, Wanda Thompson, and William L. (Angel) Thompson, Jr. He also leaves behind his aunt and surrogate mother, Louise E. Belin, and motherly figure, Audrey (John, deceased) Gilbert, as well as godchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will treasure his warmth, humor, wisdom, and kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. William Levi Thompson and Geneva Thompson; his sister, Sharon L. Benjamin; and his brother, LeVette Thompson.

Gradlin D. Thompson, Sr. will be remembered as a father, proud grandfather, and a man of faith, purpose, and integrity whose influence reached far beyond his family and career. His legacy of love, humility, laughter, and service will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

One of his favorite sayings was, “If you can live in it, I can live around it.” These words reflected his resilience, humor, and steady perspective on life — a reminder to those he loved to stay grounded and keep moving forward.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Family will receive friends at the home of his parents, 4509 Megan Rd., Florence.
