Grady Narvell Elliot, Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt) retired, a resident of Austin Texas for the past 41 years, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 4, 1933 in Frankville, Alabama to the Reverend Alphonso U. Elliot Sr. and Mabel Elliot, both deceased. He was the 2nd of four children, three boys and one girl.
Grady graduated from Mobile County Training School in Plateau, AL and then attended Alabama State University where he graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education. While in college, he joined the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity to which he was a lifelong active member. After graduation he enlisted in the US Air Force. Through his hard work, dedication, and professionalism, he achieved the esteemed rank of Chief Master Sergeant and honorably served his country for thirty years in the Personnel career field. After his retirement from the Air Force, Grady proudly worked as a Board member of the United Heritage Credit Union for 19 years before his retirement in 2021. Upon his passing he was also an active member of the Austin Retired Chiefs Society. It should also be noted that Grady was a part of the first Senior NCO academy class whose curriculum became the model for all USAF Senior NCO professional training. His picture along with his classmates hangs in a place of honor at Maxwell AFB. He was one of only two African Americans in the inaugural class in 1973.
Grady was baptized and attended Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Frankville, AL. He became a member of Wesley United Methodist church in March 1981 after his assignment to Bergstrom AFB. During the 41 years that he was a member of Wesley, he was an active member of the Intergenerational Choir, participated in the 55-Plus Ministry, was a Sunday School teacher, and was also a member of Wesley's finance committee. Being the son of a Baptist Preacher, Grady's love of the church and God was very strong,
Grady met Margaret (Young) Elliot while he was stationed at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX. They were married on June 3, 1961 at Grace Methodist Church. The wedding was officiated by Chaplain Johnson of Laughlin AFB. Grady and Margaret have two sons, Grady Jr. and Mark. Grady also has a third son, Harold, from a previous relationship. All who knew Grady knew how much he loved Margaret and his family.
Before retiring in Austin, Grady was stationed at a number of bases around the world during his illustrious
AF career. Beginning at Turner, AFB GA followed by Laughlin AFB in Del Rio TX. He also did a tour at
Evreux Air Base in France, followed by Norton AFB in San Bernadino CA, then Udorn Royal AFB in Thailand, followed by Pope AFB in NC, then Kunsan Air Base in South Korea, before finally finishing his career at Bergstrom AFB, TX,
Because of his commitment to help others, Grady was active in a number of activities in the Austin community and throughout all his duty stations. He participated in cleaning-up projects in East Austin, performed volunteer work in moving the Battered Women's warehouse, wdrked with the Capital City Food Bank, and was a mentor at Sims Elementary School. He also helped facilitate a summer youth golf program and helped institute a scholarship program while he was treasurer of the Black Heritage Association. Additionally, Grady participated in a number of charitable activities performed with and through the Austin Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. The only thing that rivaled Grady's love for helping others was that for his family, the church, and of course Golf - his favorite sport and leisure activity.
