ASHEVILLE – Grady Mathis, age 93, of Asheville, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

Mr. Mathis was born on February 21, 1932, in McDowell County and was a resident of Buncombe County most of his life. He worked at American Enka and retired from Beacon Manufacturing. He loved to go fishing and was always looking for an opportunity to go when he was not busy with something else. Grady walked everywhere he went his whole life. He was always a gentleman, he prayed multiple times a day, and would give the shirt off his back for anyone. He will be remembered as a kind person and very easy to be around and talk to. He attended Beverly Hills Baptist Church.

Grady was the son of the late Joe and Mary Flynn Mathis and was also preceded in death by sons, Mark Lee Mathis, and Craig Mathis; daughter, Cindy Mathis; brother, Melvin Mathis; and grandson, Scott Bodwell.

Surviving is his daughter, Pam Padron; daughter-in-law, Becky Mathis; grandchildren, Patricia Mathis, Joseph Mathis, Manuel Padron, Marco Padron, Brandon Mathis, Kevin Mathis, Robert Bodwell, and Jaclyn Mathis; and great grandchildren, Kaiden, Jupiter, and Silas.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, September 19, 2025, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville with Rev. Brandon Passmore officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.
