Gregoria "Goya" Garza Peña

May 9, 1940 – September 15, 2025

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we remember the beautiful life of Gregoria Garza Peña, affectionately known to everyone as "Goya." She was born on May 9, 1940, in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, México, to Miguel Garza Sierra and Petra Sierra Garza. She passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas, on September 15, at the age of 85.

Goya was a woman of incredible strength, resilience, and warmth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rogelio Peña, and her daughters, Estella Peña and Ruth Gonzalez Peña, whom she loved deeply. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Brooks, and her grandchildren, Daniel Gonzalez, Amanda Bowling, and Raquel Gonzalez, who will forever carry her love in their hearts.

Family was everything to Goya. She loved unconditionally and cared for each person around her with a tenderness that made everyone feel special. She had a gift for telling stories about her childhood and family history, always keeping those memories alive for the next generations. She was a talented cook-her tamales were legendary-and she also found joy in making jewelry and traveling to visit family near and far.

Goya's life was built on hard work, devotion, and love. She worked tirelessly to provide for her family, showing her children and grandchildren what true strength and selflessness look like. Her sweetness, kindness, and gentle spirit touched all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Services to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025 at Carnes Funeral Home in Texas City. A viewing will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a service from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Though we will miss her dearly, Goya leaves behind a legacy of love, family, and faith that will live on in all of us.
