Gregory Lee Behymer lived a beautiful and meaningful life. He was born on April 7, 1952, in Dayton, Ohio, to loving parents Ralph and Margaret, and he passed away peacefully at the age of 73.
Greg, known affectionately as Boe, discovered his passion for art as early as the 6th grade. This passion followed him throughout his life. After moving to Titusville, Florida in 1967, he continued to develop his artistic talent. In 1971, he was accepted into the freshman class of the Memphis Academy of Fine Arts in Tennessee. He enlisted in the Army in 1972, served a tour in Vietnam, and continued painting throughout his five years of military service.
After his tour of duty, Greg enrolled in college. He began at Brevard Community College and later transferred to the University of Central Florida, where he studied under Walter Gaudnek for three years. During this time, his love for the Florida landscape took shape. He painted scenes throughout Brevard County, including the St. John's River, the Indian River Lagoon, and the marshes and lakes around Windover. His style became increasingly tonalist, with brighter colors and expressive interpretations of riverscapes in every season, lighting condition, and type of weather.
In 1994, Greg was accepted to study with Alex Katz at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Katz encouraged artists to develop their own unique style, and under his guidance Greg further refined his vision. In 2007, Greg was selected for a group show at the A. E. Backus Museum and Gallery in Fort Pierce, Florida. Over three weeks, the museum showcased thirty-five of his works, including watercolors and oil paintings dating from 1992 through 2007.
Greg retired from the United States Postal Service in 2008 after twenty years of service, allowing him more time to devote to his family and his art. A gifted and prolific painter, he continued to expand his body of work, which now belongs to an extensive and cherished collection.
Greg was a devoted husband, brother, and loving father. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Rosette (Chiqui), and his four children: Aaron, Brandon, Troy, and Reyna. He is also survived by his sister Marguerite, his nephew Terrence, his dear friend Don and his beloved dog Amarok.
He will forever be in our hearts.
