Gregory Allen Bute

Gregory Allen Bute, 62, of Sullivan, passed away on February 26, 2026, under hospice care at the Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital. The son of the late Carol Jean (nee Slamcik) Smith and Leslie Lawrence Bute, Gregory was born in Cleveland and grew up in the tri-county (Ashland, Medina, Lorain) area. He graduated from Mapleton High School and Lorain Community College in 1981.

A machinist by trade, Greg worked for the Cotter & Company in Westlake and Michael Day Enterprises in Wadsworth. After his retirement, he worked maintenance at the Wellington McDonald’s for several years.

Greg was a true outdoorsman – he loved hunting, fishing, hiking and just being in the woods. He could often be found tinkering with machines, especially cars. A true handyman, Greg loved finding projects around his own home and helping others with theirs.

Survivors include his companion of 10 years, Theresa Johnson; son, Gregory Adam (T.J.) Huling-Bute, of Toledo; stepchildren, Trisha Johnson and Alysha (Sean) Ward; and grandchildren, Tatum Huling, Alissa Johnson and Barry Ward. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, John Smith; his in-laws, Milford and Lorita Morrow; and his wife, Donna Jean Bute.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 9th, 2026, at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, Wellington, beginning at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Ashland County Cancer Association, 1101 E. Main St., Ste. A, Ashland, OH 44805.
