Gregory Walter “Greg” Connelly, also known as “Twitty” by his friends, 55, of Chesterfield, VA, known for his infectious laugh, love for his family, and legendary tales from the woods and water, peacefully embarked on his final adventure on December 18, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on January 4, 1970, in Petersburg, Virginia, Greg was a man whose heartbeat was one with nature, finding his greatest joy in a sunrise hunt or the cast of a fishing line. He was a third-generation cabinet maker, following in the footsteps of his father, Gary, who passed on the expertise he learned from his father, Lathan. Greg’s heart was focused on being an avid hunter, fisherman, and all-around outdoorsman. He was the man anyone could call on in a time of need.

Greg is survived by his best friend and love, Stephanie Payne Connelly, to whom he was married for 11 years and together for 21 years; his beloved parents, Gary Lathan and Margaret (Teachey) Connelly; his children, Michael Connelly (Kristina), Justin Watkins (Kari), Amanda Murphy, and Megan Hawkins (Josh); his sister, Jackie Farrar; brother, Gary Fink (Robin); brother-in-law, Mark Johnson; and son-in-law, Brian Murphy.

Greg’s favorite role was being “Pops” to his amazing grandchildren: Ryland Connelly, Anna Connelly, Lacy Murphy, Lathan Murphy, Lilly Murphy, Lynnlee Ferguson, Elaina Hawkins, Alina Bray, and Avery Watkins. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and his best pal and companion—his fur baby, “Lucky.”

Greg was preceded in death by his grandparents, Russell Lathan and Margaret (Kurtinecz) Connelly, David Clifton and Maryrita (Gallagher) Teachey; his sister, Christy (Connelly) Johnson; his nephew, Richard “Curtis” Phillips; and his brother-in-law, Jeff Farrar.

Greg was a true outdoorsman—a seasoned hunter who respected the wild and a fisherman who loved sharing his expertise with his grandchildren, family, and friends. Whether tracking deer through crisp autumn leaves or navigating the river at dawn, he taught those around him to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Immediately following the memorial service, a celebration of Greg’s life—fitting for a man who loved the outdoors—will be held at Woodpecker Lodge in Chesterfield, VA, where stories and memories will be shared.

In honor of Greg, please come dressed as you wish, whether in camo, fishing gear, or jeans. All are welcome.

Greg has simply gone fishing and hunting, and we know he’s found the perfect spot.
