Gregroy "Greg" Dexter Cunningham, 77, of San Angelo Texas passed away, Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Mr. Cunningham was born July 2, 1948 to William and Bethel Cunningham in San Jose, California. Greg was a graduate of Saratoga High School and went on to college at San Bernadino Valley College, where his interests lay in broadcasting. He was a DJ for his college station and later turned that passion into music. With his first wife, and close friends, he traveled the western United States playing cover tunes and original compositions. After his divorce, he met his second wife, Alexandra, who shared his passion for music as well. They married September 18, 1988 in Saritoga, California and then settled down to "real jobs" in the San Jose area, hoping to start a family. They lost 3 babies to medical complications, and were surrounded by brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and life was good.
Greg and Alex moved to San Angelo in 2012 and soon started their own business, BackBeat Music Company, joining the local music community and mentoring young and fledgling musicians. Greg became an accomplished luthier and guitar tech and is much loved in the music community.
Greg is survived by his wife of 37 years, Alexandra Cunningham of the home; his furrbabies, Milo, Butch and Fawna; his mother-in-law, Geri Howell of San Angelo; sister-in-law, Lynnettee Haverty of San Angelo; nieces, Jacklyn Ngo and Jennifer Haverty both of the San Francisco Bay area; and nephew, Jacob Haverty of San Angelo. Greg is also survived by a legion of close and beloved friends, especially his lifelong friend, Steve Gies of San Angelo, who was with him in the days before he passed and was great support to Alex. Greg is preceded in death by his parents, William Cunningham and Bethel Cunningham.
Greg's wish was to be cremated, and his ashes spread over Lake Shasta in Northern California, a place very special to him. No services will be held, but a Celebration of Life Music Jam will be held at a future date, with details to be determined.
