Gregory Martin Diemer, 83, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Faith was the foundation of Greg’s life. His deep devotion to God guided his actions, inspired his compassion, and gave him strength throughout life’s challenges. He lived each day with gratitude, humility, and a sincere belief in service to others.

Born on September 20, 1942, and raised on the family farm near Heron Lake, Minnesota, Greg grew up with a deep appreciation for hard work, family, and integrity. He graduated from Heron Lake High School and later earned his degree from Mankato State University, setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to education and public service.

Greg began his professional career with the State of Minnesota Auditor’s Office before finding his true calling in higher education. Over the next five decades, he dedicated himself to fostering opportunity and excellence for students and institutions alike. He was the Vice President of Finance at Southwest Minnesota State University, where he also served as Interim President. Greg then pursued an opportunity as the Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. His retirement in June 2017 marked the culmination of 50 years of devoted leadership, mentorship, and service in academia. Greg was admired for his diplomacy and problem-solving mindset, which always began with finding ways to say “yes” rather than reasons to say “no.”

Beyond his career, Greg’s life was defined by his profound love for family, enduring friendships, and a generous spirit.

He is survived by his cherished wife of 36 years, Blanche “Peggy” Carrier-Diemer, and his loyal companion, Charleston, who never left his side.

He will be profoundly missed by his children: Kristin Diemer (Roozbeh Malekzadeh), Michael Diemer, Paula (Christopher) Mikl, James Diemer, Jennifer Szczytko, and Aaron (Donna) Szczytko; his beloved grandchildren: Maksim and Maitlyn Mikl; Jackson and Sabrina Janda; Landon (Stephanie), Lleyton, and Lane Spivey. Greg is also survived by siblings: George (Collette) Diemer, Mary Schmid, and Roxy (Robert) Schmidt; his first wife, Judith Haberman Freking, and dozens of nieces and nephews who will miss his humor, guidance, and kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mildred (Haas) Diemer, and sisters, Pauline Seglem, Carole Morris, and Marlene Hall.

Greg’s life was one of quiet strength, steadfast faith, and unwavering dedication to others. He believed in the value of education, the joy of good company, the comfort of a faithful dog by his side, and a quality draft IPA. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the institutions he strengthened, and the family that cannot find the words to express how much they treasured him. The depth of sorrow from his passing is overcome by the solace that Greg was chosen to join his Savior in his eternal home.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
