Gregory Gaffney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell and Thomas Funeral Home - Richboro on Jun. 27, 2023.
Gregory P. Gaffney passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at the age of 40.
He was the loving father of Matthew J. and Mia N. Gaffney and the cherished son of Phillip M. and Kathleen M. (née Ames) Gaffney. He was the loving brother of Kathleen M. Gaffney, Philip J. Gaffney and his wife Kisha (née Rucker), the late Matthew D. Gaffney and Megan E. (née Gaffney) and her husband Daniel T. Clapp. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, great aunts, aunts, uncles, cousins and many dear friends.
As a devout Catholic, Gregory truly lived his faith. He raised his children in a way that has set them on the path to receive all of the Sacraments that are consistent with a practicing Catholic. Understanding the dangers that he and his SORT teammates faced on a regular basis, Gregory advocated for Team prayer to be included as regular preparation prior to the execution of high-risk operations.
Gregory entered duty with the Delaware State Police in 2011. In 2014, Gregory was selected to the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) and was certified as a SORT operator with the primary role of an Assaulter. In 2016, Gregory completed Sniper training and served as a Sniper / Observer, as well as an Assaulter for the years leading up to his untimely passing. In 2022, Gregory was promoted to the Assistant Team Leader position for SORT's North Squad. SORT has been called to service for some of the State's most dangerous and violent tragedies, including but not limited to a Prison Riot that evolved into a Hostage Rescue with multiple barricaded subjects, a murdered State Trooper resulting in a barricaded subject, a hostage rescue resulting in the successful recovery of a young girl, and countless other high-risk tactical operations. Gregory consistently sought to improve himself and contribute positively to his teammates.
Gregory served his country honorably. Prior to entering into the Delaware State Police, Gregory served his country in the United States Army. From 2008 to 2009 Gregory deployed to Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Then 1LT Gregory Gaffney, led a platoon of soldiers in support of counter-terrorism operations in and around the city of Baghdad, Iraq. For his courage, leadership, and devotion to his soldiers and mission, he was awarded the BRONZE STAR and the U.S. Army Combat Action Badge, among other awards.
In addition to his service to our country, Greg's additional achievements include being recruited in 2001 to play Division 1 college football in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) for Mississippi State University.
Greg's legacy will be His love of family and friends which was evident by His never-ending loyalty and devotion to all.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Thursday, June 29, 2023 from 5PM to 8PM in Saint Jude Church and Shrine 321 West Butler Pike, Chalfont, PA 18914 and on Friday, June 30, 2023 from 10:00AM to 11:45AM also in the above-named church. The celebration of his funeral Mass will begin at 12PM with interment following in Saint John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont, PA. A livestream of the funeral Mass will be provided by the church at the link below.

Greg was a student of mine at Butler Elementary in Chalfont. I was his fifth grade teacher. At that time we took all fifth grade students to College Settlement Camp in Horsham for three days and two nights.
On one day before dinner all the students were playing outside while waiting for dinner at the dining hall. Greg was on the basketball courts playing some game when one of the students came running over telling me that Greg was hurt. I ran over to him and saw the biggest egg on his head I´d ever seen. Since I was one of the only chaperones who had a car, I called Greg´s family and reported the incident and told them I was taking Greg to Doylestown Hospital.
Greg was fine all the way to the hospital. I was a wreck. Greg´s head looked awful. I was worried about concussions and hoping he would remain conscious. I got him to the hospital and met his father. I must have sounded like a rambling idiot as I spoke to his dad explaining what happened.
As things turned out Greg was checked out and as I remember there were no serious complications. His dad was very understanding and Greg was returned to camp the next day. It was definitely a time in a teacher´s career that will not be forgotten. May God give rest to your soul.

As one of my son Steve's friends, he was always welcomed in our house. He was a competitor on the football field and a gentleman in our house. We are shocked and saddened by this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. R.I.P. Greg. The Mocey family
