Mr. Gregory Allen Jarrell, AKA “Papaw”, age 64 of Mount Airy, passed away on Tuesday night January 27, 2026, at his home with his loving wife by his side. He was born April 21, 1961, in Beckley, West Virginia to Muriel Smith Jarrell and the late Freddie Dallas Jarrell. Mr. Jarrell is survived by his wife, Linda Blankenship Jarrell of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Kellie and Kevin Hunter; son and daughter-in-law, Ryan and Maggie Jarrell; his five precious granddaughters whom he loved and adored, Emerie Hunter, Aubrie Hunter, Ellie Jarrell, River Jarrell, and Alora Jarrell; step daughter-in-law, Amber Blankenship; mother, Muriel Smith Jarrell; brother, Ricky Dallas Jarrell; niece, Rickayla Jarrell; special friends, Eric Puckett, Donnie Riggs, Dennis Thomas, Wesley Crotts, and many many more. In addition to his father, Mr. Jarrell was preceded in death by an infant sister, Donna Sue Jarrell; a step son-in-law, Eddie Blankenship; and a sister-in-law, Melissa Jarrell.
Mr. Jarrell was an auto mechanic by trade for nearly 50 years, but he was much much more to his family and friends. Greg was the son of a coal miner. He was known as an honest, knowledgeable, hardworking man who lived life by the golden rule, “Treat others the way you want to be treated”. He could fix or make anything. He was devoted to his wife Linda of nearly 20 years and together they had many adventures going to the flea markets, riding their Harley with their leathers on and going to Indian Pow Wows. Greg loved his friends and family deeply. If you knew Greg, you knew he loved to reminisce about Kellie’s softball pitching days and he loved to sit on the bucket and be the hind catcher during her pitching practice. Greg and Ryan loved to go fishing together and tinker with four wheelers and cars. Greg passed down his values and his knowledge of the auto mechanic trade to Ryan. He was extremely proud of the adults his children turned out to be. Greg was always surrounded by friends when he worked at his automotive shop and was grateful for the many friends he had.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday February 3, 2026, at 4:00pm in the Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Brother David Heath and Brother Scottie Bullins officiating. The family will receive friends at Moody’s from 3:00 until 4:00pm. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
