Gilbert Jarrell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Preston and Simons Mortuary - Riverside on Jan. 15, 2026.
Gilbert Jarrell, age 81, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, at Desert Valley Hospital, surrounded by his children. He was born on January 11, 1944, in Asheboro, North Carolina, to Raymond T. Jarrell and Helen O. Jarrell.

Gilbert proudly served in the United States Army, where he enlisted as a private and completed four years of service, earning an honorable discharge. During his time in the Army, he worked as an electronic mechanic in a civilian occupational specialty, contributing to work involving nuclear weapons systems, electrical systems, and the space division.

Following his military service, Gilbert built a long career with the United States Postal Service, where he served as a supervisor over the maintenance department until his retirement. In 1985, he moved his family from North Carolina to California, a decision that shaped the lives of generations to come.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kitten Jarrell, known lovingly to her family as "KK," who passed away in March of 2025.

Gilbert is survived by his children: Gidget Woodward and her husband Robert Woodward, JR Jarrell and his wife Amanda Jarrell, and Tanisha Jarrell. He was a proud grandfather to Willow Laverne, Abigail Woodward, Rebekah Woodward, Colby Jarrell, Makenna Jarrell, and Autumn Jarrell, each of whom brought him great joy. He is also survived by his brothers, Phillip Jarrell and Vance Jarrell; and his nieces, Vickie Sykes, Stacy Mushakian and Sheli Szeliga; and his nephews, Tony Poole and Randy Poole.

Gilbert was known for his sharp mind and dry, sarcastic sense of humor. He loved his family deeply and showed his devotion in quiet, steady ways. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing golf, reading, and traveling. Some of his grandchildren's fondest memories include trips to the swap meet and time spent raising baby chickens together when they were young, moments that reflected his love for being present in their lives.

Gilbert will be remembered for his strength, intelligence, and unwavering love for Jesus.
