Gregory Allen Magin, age 69, of Ocala Florida, departed this life peacefully on June 7, 2024, in the care of Hospice. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank P. Magin, Jr., his mother Helen, and his half-brother Frank P. Magin, III. He is survived by his children, Chelsea Magin (David Wilson) and Joseph "Joey" Magin; his grandson Brennan Wilson; his sister Renée Gluvna (Frank); his niece Allison Folk (Josh); and nephew Randy Gluvna.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Greg attended St. Xavier High School, and University of Cincinnati, where he briefly studied Electrical Engineering. He continued self-directed studies in engineering throughout his entire career and moved to Sarasota, Florida in the late 70's, where his sister had recently relocated. Greg worked there at EMR Telemetry until he moved to Ocala in the early 80's. His career there included workplaces such as Microdyne, Intellon, Atheros, and Qualcomm where he contributed innovative ideas, managed teams, and mentored many coworkers during his career. Greg moved to San Jose, California in 2014 to continue with Qualcomm after the Ocala office closed. Upon retirement in 2017, he moved back to Ocala.
Greg's interest in things electrical began at the age of 3, when he plugged in an old power cord that had been removed from a small non-functioning appliance. He was fascinated seeing the end sparking and jumping around. That led to his dad constructing a "busy box" for him out of a wooden crate. It included lights, beepers, buzzers, and a doorbell controlled by knobs and dials. The box became a favorite of his and he spent many hours working the controls. A few years later, a neighbor interested him in amateur radio. He learned Morse Code and achieved his Novice license. Then he taught his dad, who also became a "ham." Over the years Greg moved through the ranks and got his General Class license. Appropriately enough, he became a Communications Systems Engineer, becoming inventor on 17 patents and rising to the rank of Principal Engineer/Manager.
Greg loved nature and preserving the memory of its beauty with photography. He enjoyed growing plants and flowers, being outdoors with his beloved dogs, and spending quiet time with his dear cat. In his spare time, he built and refurbished guitars and amplifiers, with a special interest in vintage tube amps. Of course, he enjoyed strumming one of his many custom guitars.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for the neighbors, friends, and co-workers Greg met along the way. If you would like to receive notification for this event, please email Renée Gluvna. Donations in his memory can be made to the Audubon Society.

Greg was a childhood friend. I first met his dad, Frank, on the radio one evening when I was 13 and he introduced me to his son. It turned out that Greg went to the high school that I was planning to attend. Although he was 2-years older than me, we did many things electronic together, usually on a Saturday night in his parent's basement. I was fascinated with the kinds of things he could build. He was truly a gifted engineer, even as a teen. And he was always a clown and kept me entertained. I followed Greg to the University of Cincinnati (UC) as an electrical engineering student. He introduced me to a neighbor, also a ham and a professor at UC who was instrumental in finding my first job and my acceptance to grad school. When I was a freshman, Greg nominated me as an officer of the university radio club. That kicked off my deep involvement in the club for the next 5-years and my desire to be in leadership roles the rest of my life. Sadly, I lost touch with Greg when he withdrew UC, but I often checked on his location in the ham radio directory. I'm sad to see that he has departed our world at such a young age. God speed, Greg and thanks for mentoring me and for the fun we had all those years ago!

When Intellon acquired our Canadian company, I met Greg at a lunch meeting in Ocala. He asked me lots of fun questions, but mostly he made us feel comfortable and welcome. He helped us solve some pretty interesting problems and he had a super sense of humour.
