Gregory Alan Mather December 6, 1939 - March 9, 2025
Gregory Alan Mather of Spring, Texas, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday March 9, 2025, at the age of 85.
Greg was born in West Hollywood, CA to parents, Rosalie & John (Jack) Mather. He leaves his wife of 43 years, Becky S. Mather; preceded in death by his mother Rose, his father Jack, his brother Jack Mather, his son Greg Mather, Jr., and his stepson Troy Hamilton; survived by: his son Geoffrey E. Mather & his wife Kathy; his son James (Jay) M. Mather & his wife Lisa; his daughter, Melinda (Mindy) L. Mather & her husband Scott; his nephew Jack Mather, his step-daughter, Melinda (Mindy) H. George & her husband Robert George; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Mather, Ella & Sam Mather, Jacob Wheat, Calah Adams & her partner Aaron Wilson, Benjamin Adams & his wife Cynthia; and his great grandchild, Milo Adams.
After high school, he attended the prestigious U.S. Naval Academy in beautiful Annapolis, MD, where he achieved some truly amazing accomplishments. While at the Naval Academy, he was on the track team performing the shot put &, of course, as you probably already know, he was an integral part of Navy football!
During Greg's tenure in the Naval Academy Football Program, he established collegiate scoring records for the 1961 season including, kicker with 55 points, four points better than the previous high. He connected 11 field goals & 22 of 23 conversions. He kicked three field goals against Detroit & broke his own record for the longest field goal in Navy history (42 yards against Washington in 1960) with a 45-yard effort against Penn State. Greg, a talented end, caught 22 passes for 258 yards during the 1961 season & punted for an average of 35.3 yards. He played in the first U.S. Bowl Game in Washington, D.C., & has been selected to play in the All-America game at Buffalo, N.Y. & the College All-Star game in Chicago. In addition to his football ability, Greg was also an outstanding shot putter for the Navy track team. During the indoor season, he established a new record in the shot at the VMI Relays with a heave of 54 feet, 1-½ inches.
Additionally, Greg was presented with the following recognitions: All-America in Football; presented the Sports Illustrated Lineman of the Week Award in recognition of exceptional performance in the game between Navy & Notre Dame on November 4, 1961; Won the Naval Academy Athletic Association sword for personal excellence in athletics, one of the top two athletic awards presented by the Naval Academy. Named to Navy's Half-Century Football Team; Greg's kicking shoe, encased in gold, is proudly displayed in the Naval Academy's Football Hall of Fame.
Lieutenant Greg Mather served his country for six years performing his duty as a Naval Supply Corp Officer. During his service, Greg was honored with the National Defense Service Medal. Greg earned a Bachelor of Science Engineering from the Naval Academy. After his Honorable discharge, Greg was drafted by the New York Giants to play Professional Football where he was injured in training camp, thereby ending his football career. Greg spent many years in executive management in the oil services industry. He enjoyed many successful endeavors along the way. While serving as Senior Vice President at Milchem, a drilling fluids company, he met, fell in love with & married Becky, the love of his life.
During Greg's life with Becky, together they grew in Christ with God using them and their experiences to serve others. Greg loved Jesus & he loved people! If one was fortunate enough to know Greg, they appreciated his wonderful sense of humor & his kind heart. He was wise in many ways & was a mentor to a number of people.
Becky & Greg started most of their days reading God's Word & praying together. Greg was quick to share his faith in God & to share his testimony of accepting Jesus as his Lord & Savior. Even in Greg's final years and days, he continued to stay strong in his faith.
Greg took his role as an Elder at WoodsEdge Community Church seriously & was humble & grateful for the opportunity to serve in that position. In addition, Becky & Greg continued to be an active part of their church community small group & were deeply honored to be prayer partners. After the loss of Becky's son Troy, Becky & Greg were involved in the Grief Support Ministry to help people in the Church & Community dealing with the loss of a child.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to WoodsEdge Community Church or the charity of your choice.
