Mr. Gregory Small, 71, of
Columbia, South Carolina, entered eternal rest on December 17, 2025. He was born on July 8, 1954, in
Saginaw, Michigan, to the late Eli Small and Ethel Watson Small.
Gregory was educated in the Saginaw Public School System and graduated from Saginaw High School. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and a heart for service. One of his greatest skills-scrapping-was taught to him by his Uncle Al. What began as a learned trade became a lifelong specialty that Gregory proudly carried with him until his final days.
Gregory was a common man who lived a simple life, yet his impact on others was profound. He loved to cook and was well known for hosting neighborhood BBQs, where everyone was welcome to eat, fellowship, and feel at home. Feeding the homeless was close to his heart, and he freely gave his time, resources, and compassion wherever he saw a need. A cheerful giver and willing volunteer, Gregory consistently shared his gifts and talents with the community in which he lived.
Affectionately known as "The Candy Man," Gregory brought joy to many in the simplest of ways. Before each of his doctor's appointments, he would stop by Family Dollar to purchase bags of candy to give to nurses and patients who wanted some. That small act of kindness left a lasting impression and became a signature part of who he was.
Gregory had a deep love for animals, especially his beloved dog, RiRi. The bond they shared was special and unmistakable. He also loved fishing, which was one of his favorite pastimes, offering him peace and reflection. Music was another passion of his-he was a self-taught bass and guitar player who enjoyed playing for the community, church, and local schools.
Family meant everything to Gregory. He shared an especially close bond with his sisters and deeply loved his mother, remaining faithfully by her side throughout his childhood and beyond. Known for keeping a small circle of friends both as a youngster and as an adult, Gregory valued meaningful relationships over quantity. He also found great joy in volunteering at schools, working with children and staff, and contributing wherever he could be of help.
In addition to his parents, Gregory was preceded in death by his brother, Myron Small.
He leaves to cherish his memory his brother, Milton Small; his sister, Theresa Melton; his niece, Regina Melton-Weldon; his nephew, LeAndré Melton; and a host of extended family members, friends, and community members who were touched by his generosity, kindness, and humble spirit.
Gregory Small lived a life of quiet service, open hands, and a giving heart. His legacy will live on through the many lives he fed, uplifted, and inspired. Family and friends are encouraged to share memories of Gregory via a memorial Facebook page: Gregory Small Memorial.
