Gregory Winans Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 15, 2024.
Gregory Charles Winans
"Greg" was born on September 17, 1958, and passed away on November 6, 2024, after a brief battle with metastatic gastroesophageal cancer.
He was the son of Dorothy Hilde and Charles Winans and grew up in New Brighton, MN. The family lived on the south end of Long Lake, where Greg cherished many fond memories with family, neighbors and friends.
In the 1960's Dorothy and Chuck divorced and Greg along with his older sister Cindy and younger sister Lori, moved to the north end of Long Lake. There the family expanded to include their stepfather, James P. Cobb, as well as stepsister Lynn and stepbrothers Mike and Tom.
Greg was an exceptional athlete, excelling in cross-country running and swimming throughout his school years. His dedication to swimming led him to compete in nationals while attending Bemidji State University.
He was also a skilled and meticulous craftsman, building many homes, accessory buildings, decks and landscaping features. Before retiring, he worked in commercial construction and took great pride in projects that required precision, particularly those within the hospital and medical community.
He lived in New Brighton, MN, Utah, and most recently on the beautiful shores of Lake Mille Lacs in Onamia, MN.
Greg is survived by his two children: Cayan Winans of Duluth, MN and Sunneativa "Sunny" Winans of Utah. He is also survived by the mother of his children and "love of his life", Melanie Beecroft Winans of Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Dorothy Cobb and Chuck Winans, his stepfather Pat Cobb, and his stepbrother Mike Cobb.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 22 at Hillside Chapel, 2610 19th Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, with the service at 11:00 AM.
Following the service, there will be a short walk uphill from the chapel to the interment site. Please dress for the weather if you'd like to join us. Greg will rest a few steps away from his mother, "Dorothy Hilde Cobb".
