Gregory Allen Winfree passed away on Thursday, March 12th, 2026, at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Bossier City, Louisiana, at the age of 76.
Greg was born in Whitakers, North Carolina, on February 13th, 1950, to Matthew Franklin and Ruth Ann Proctor Winfree. Greg was a graduate of Northern Nash High School, Rocky Mount, N.C. Throughout his career in the United States Air Force, he earned a B.S. in Industrial Technology and later pursued a master’s degree.
Greg joined the USAF on December 31st, 1968, retiring as a Captain on January 31st, 1993. After retiring from the USAF, he held several jobs until his retirement. He was a school bus driver for Bossier Parish for 10 years alongside his wife. He worked managing contracts at Goodwill and Citizens Bank. He worked at a welfare office and as an insurance adjustor for Shelter Insurance.
He married Mavis Deloris Heathcock of Lambrook, Arkansas, on March 17th, 1973. Together, they had one child, Spencer Dean Winfree, during their 52 years of marriage.
Greg enjoyed working in his yard, whether it be mowing the yard or taking care of his flower beds and shrubs he had planted throughout the years. He also loved going to the movies and lunch every Saturday with his wife and son, a tradition they held for many years. Greg was mechanically inclined and was always fixing something around the house. He was the caretaker of both home and family.
Surviving are his wife, Mavis Winfree; son, Spencer Dean; sisters, Florence Gupton and Linda Boseman (Rusty); brother, Daniel Edward, and sister-in-law, Judy Winfree.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Jean Carrico (Thomas); four brothers, Tommy Farr, Raymond Keith, James Alton (Janey), and William Robert.
There will be no service at this time.
