Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South - TuscaloosaGreta Mae Smith Bambarger, age 77, of Eutaw, Alabama, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025. Born on September 20, 1947, Greta lived a life defined by love, resilience, and unwavering devotion to those around her.
She was the cherished wife of the late Jim “Bam” Bambarger, beloved daughter of the late Elam and Vesta Smith, and the baby sister of the late Aloma Johnston (Jack) and the late Yvonne Smith. Greta was the devoted mother of Bridgett Monk (Derek) and Leslie Abernathy, and the proud grandmother of Elizabeth Monk, Scott Monk (Zessie), Berkeley Gamble (Jonathan), and Jackson Abernathy. She was also a beloved aunt and great-aunt to many nieces and nephews who adored her.
Greta’s circle of love extended far beyond family. She was a loyal friend to the fabulous coffee group, a nurturing caregiver to everyone she met, and the loving dog mom to Dodger, her Boykin Spaniel.
Born with a heart condition that required surgery in childhood, Greta was raised with care and protection but she grew into a woman of remarkable strength, spirit, and compassion. She was the matriarch of her family, the glue that held everyone together, and the heart of every gathering. Her home was filled with warmth, laughter, and the most delicious food: blueberry pies, sand tarts, cookies, and homemade jelly that her grandchildren “shopped” from her pantry. Greta made sure everyone’s favorites were always waiting.
Her compassion extended to animals, many of whom she rescued. She loved to travel, especially to cheer on her Dodgers at the ballpark. If you visited her home, chances are the Dodgers were playing on TV. She also found joy in riding horses and playing games with her grandchildren where she was, more often than not, the reigning champion.
Greta’s life was an example of Christlike love and service. She gave generously, listened deeply, and embraced everyone with kindness. A friend of Greta’s said so perfectly, “I can hear Greta saying, ‘I can’t make it to coffee this morning girls, I’m in heaven.’”
A celebration of Greta’s life will be held at Union Christian Church in Eutaw, Alabama, on Saturday, August 16, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM and the service at 11:00 AM.
Pallbearers will be Scott Monk, Jackson Abernathy, Jonathan Gamble, Dave Koenecke, William Cousins, Forest Wilson, Kelvin Walton, and Gerry Walton.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Union Christian Church, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, or a charity close to your heart.
