Guillermina Aguirre, 88, beloved matriarch of the Aguirre family, passed away Friday, March 21, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on July 20, 1936, to Jose Duarte and Aurelia Munoz, Guillermina was one of nine children. She grew up in Namiquipa, Mexico, a small town in the mountains of Chihuahua, where she worked as a teacher. Later, as a young wife she followed her husband, Samuel Aguirre, Sr., to Texas, where they raised five children.
After they parted ways, the homemaker - with a house full of teenagers - went to work at Lorenzo ISD, South Park Hospital, and later, until her retirement, at Texas Tech University, where she made those spaces gleam.
She enjoyed tending to her flowers in her front yard and took pride in decorating her house, which was immaculately maintained. She loved watching her telenovelas, visiting and gossiping with family and friends, reading, and listening to music. And, she could never pass up a good garage sale.
Her greatest joy, though, was her family. A much cherished mother and grandmother, she was always willing to lend a hand to family or friends in need. She welcomed new grandchildren with an embroidered pillowcase or a hand-sewn blanket and had fun sewing outfits for Barbie and baby dolls. She was a wonderful cook and her children and grandchildren were always eager to visit, knowing they would often find their favorite meal at her table. She also used those skills as a Guadalupana, where she helped cook countless meals for her faith community.
A member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, she had a deep faith and absolutely believed in the power of prayer.
Guillermina Aguirre is survived by her children Richard (Dianne) Aguirre, Gustavo (Gloria) Aguirre, Idalia (Mike) Northcott, Mary Helen Aguirre (Trip Jennings), and Sam (Sara) Aguirre; her grandchildren Jose (Amanda) Aguirre, Ricardo (Leslie) Aguirre, Marihelen (Stephen) Patrick, Jacob (Angela) Aguirre, Gus (Kara) Aguirre, Aaron Aguirre, Raymond Salazar, Ryan Salazar, William Jennings, Kathryn Jennings, Amanda Aguirre, Alejandra Aguirre, and Lauren Aguirre; 20 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Visitation is planned at 5 p.m. to be followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the Memorial Chapel in Sanders Funeral Home,1420 Main St. Lubbock. A mass in her honor will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church,1120 52nd St., Lubbock.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church's Guadalupanas.
