Gust Dickett Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 17, 2025.
Gust W. Dickett born June 4, 1933, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on September 15, 2025. He joins Ann Marie, the love of his life and wife of more than 60 years, on their next journey.

He is survived by his sister Thean Grafos, his brother Peter and his children Diane Smart (Bill), Bill (Durga Bharam), Jim (Julie), and Jeanine Cooksey. He was the beloved pappou/grandfather of Alanna (Dan Schroeder) and Alex (Grace) Smart; Matthew (Halee), Emily, Erin, Jessica and Alex Dickett; and the great grandfather of Will Smart and Serena Schroeder. In addition to Ann Marie, Gust joins his father and mother, William and Evelyn Dickett and his great-granddaughter Caroline Casey ("CC") Smart in heaven.

Gust grew up in the Chatham and Beverly neighborhoods of Chicago. Gust's father owned a wholesale produce company, so Gust spent many days at the Water Market or behind the wheel of a produce truck. Gust decided to pursue his dreams beyond the family business and received a degree in accounting from the University of Illinois. After serving in the Army and teaching at the University of Illinois Navy Pier campus, Gust continued his education and received a law degree from the DePaul University College of Law. Gust started his legal career with the Cook County States Attorney and then continued his career in private practice. Gust was a founding member of Romanoff & Dickett and specialized in State and Local taxation matters for more than 57 years before retiring.

Away from the office, Gust was active in city, county and state politics and was always prepared to support his preferred candidates. In a more formal role, Gust served as the long-time campaign treasurer for Sheriff Richard J. Elrod. In addition to politics, Gust was an active participant and supporter of several Greek Orthodox Churches, in particular Assumption Greek Orthodox Church when the church was located in Olympia Fields. In his spare time, Gust was always happy when he was playing golf. He also enjoyed spending time with his and Ann Marie's children and grandchildren – in Illinois, at Abbey Springs in Fontana, Wisconsin, and over many spring break trips to Carlsbad, California.

Gust faced several health challenges during his final years. A special thanks goes to his physicians and all of the other caregivers whose patience and kindness shepherded Gust through those challenging times. A private memorial service and burial have already been held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 15625 S. Bell Road, Homer Glen, IL 60491 or Cadre Hospice Chicago LLC.
