Gwendolyn Smith Fleming was born March 15, 1929, to Albert Oscar Smith and Anna Murrah Smith in Pearl, Texas. She passed away on December 13, 2024, at the age of 95.

She was the second of eight children- five boys and three girls. She was raised in Pearl and graduated from Pearl High School in 1946 where she was a cheerleader and captain of the girls’ basketball team. When she thought of going home, it was always to Pearl and Gatesville. When she was out and about, she would point out someone and say they were from Gatesville because you could always tell Gatesville people.

In 1946 she met and married Wayne Fleming who was just back from serving in World War II. They made their home in different places in Coryell and Bell County until 1955 when they moved to Cameron. While in Cameron, Wayne worked for Alcoa, and they raised all five of their children. They were married for 58 years until he passed away in 2004.

The two most important parts of Gwen’s life were her church and her family. She was a member for many years of the Crockett Street Church of Christ in Cameron, and then when she moved back to Gatesville, she attended Fort Gates Church of Christ and Cedar Ridge Church of Christ. She rarely missed a Sunday, and all her children were taught the importance of Christ and church.

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Gervase Smith, Bryan Smith, Duayne Smith, and F.B. Smith; and sisters, Cynthia Neatherlin and Carolyn Brooks.

She is survived by her brother James of Fort Worth, and her children, Linda Foster and husband Robert of Georgetown, Regina Young and husband Marvin of Cameron, Paula Lopez and husband Leo of Burleson, Don Fleming and wife Laura of Denton, and Debra Michalka and husband Carroll of Rogers. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
