H. Eugene Garner, 93, of Marklesburg, James Creek, PA., passed away September 1, 2023 at 10:15 a.m., surrounded by members of his family.
Born at his home, the Brumbaugh Mansion of Timothy Meadows Farm, R.D. Hesston, PA., on July 16, 1930 to parents, Homer and Della M. (Brumbaugh) Garner. He was the last surviving member of his family. Gene is survived by his loving wife, Anna Ruth (Weller) Garner, whom he married on June 10, 1956 at the Zion's Reformed Church of Marklesburg, having celebrated 67 years of marriage. Also surviving are two children: daughter, Linda M. (Garner) Strong, Shelocta, PA, and son, John R. (Kim) Garner of Alexandria, PA, along with 5 grandchildren: Amber (Pat) Arrigan,
Windsor, NY, Travis (Maujesca) Garner, Michele (Jason) Weaver, Saxton, PA., Ryan Garner (Cheridyn Lucas, special friend),
Homosassa, FL. and Roger Strong, Shelocta, PA. Also surviving are 15 great-grandchildren: Maddison, Lucas, and Toryn Garner; Abigail (Kaden) Lucko, Aubree and Avery Weaver; Mariah, Blake, Allyson, Aiden, and Natalie Strong; Avianna, Cecelia, Isabella, and Patrick Arrigan, along with brother-in-law, Ronald McCall, Shippensburg, PA; sister-in-law, Isabel Blackburn, Silver Springs, MD and many special nieces and nephews.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Ralph Edward Garner (Winifred), Hesston, PA and Dorothy (Garner) Jamison McCall, Shippensburg, PA, and grandson, Ronald Strong, New Smyrna Beach, FL, along with in-laws: John (Janet), Robert (Mae), Max (Virginia), Paul Weller and Betty (Wayne) Morningstar.
Gene began his education in the Bowers One-Room Schoolhouse near his home followed by 4 years at the Huntingdon High School, graduating in the class of 1947 at the age of 16.
He had many jobs and interests including dairy farming, Purchasing Agent at SCI Huntingdon, a licensed Insurance Agent, including Chairman of the Board of Bedford Co. Grange Mutual until the age of 91 and on the Board of Directors to present, Valley View Cemetery, Zion's UCC and Joint Consistory for Woodcock Valley Cemetery Board, the last remaining charter member of the Marklesburg Volunteer Fire Co., Raystown Ministries Coordinator EMT, Co-Leader for Marklesburg Boy Scout Troop #21, hunting, fishing, camping, drawing, painting, and working with wood.
Eugene grew up as a member of the James Creek Church of the Brethren, moving his membership to Zion's Reformed Church, now the United Church of Christ in Marklesburg after marriage.
Gene will be remembered as a very kind and giving person, who was willing to help anyone in need when possible and who loved his family and friends very much.
Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023, and from 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023, until the time of service at 11 a.m. at the Zion's United Church of Christ in Marklesburg, 15717 Raystown Road, James Creek, PA 16657. Interment will be in the Valley View Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Inc., with the Rev. Mary Hendricks and Pastor Dale Parker officiating.
