Hallie W. Wall

Hallie Wynne Wall, 79, passed away on June 26, 2024.
She was born on September 18, 1944, to the late William W. Wynne and Hallie Botter Wynne of Mobile. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, William H. Wall.
She grew up in Mobile, Ala., and graduated from Bishop Toolen High School in 1962. She maintained close friendships throughout her life with her classmates, who she affectionately referred to as the "Toolen girls."
She received a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and a Master of Arts in anthropology from The University of Alabama. A lifelong learner, she was passionate about understanding ancient civilizations and how they affect today's world. She had a keen interest in archaeology and was the director at The University of Alabama's Moundville Archaeological Park. She also did extensive anthropological research in South America in the 1970s.
Before starting graduate school, she returned to Mobile, where she worked as a social worker for the Mobile County Department of Pensions and Security (now the Alabama Department of Human Resources). During graduate school, she was the Residence Hall Director for Julia Tutwiler Hall where she oversaw the daily operations of the 1,000-bed residence hall. She then served as the assistant director of housing at The University of Alabama from 1971-1978.
She moved to Montgomery in 1978 and joined the faculty at Alabama State University as a professor of geography and later served as a professor at Auburn University Montgomery.
Years later, she served as the development director for Resurrection Catholic Missions of the South and was deeply committed to the mission of supporting the work of the Fr. Walter Memorial Child Care Center. She also served on the board of directors for Catholic Social Services Montgomery.
She was the quintessential mother, who instilled a love for learning in her daughter, never missed a school function or sports activity, and loved Nancy's classmates and friends as her own. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She was a devoted grandmother to Will (11) and George (6) and found great pleasure in taking them on fun outings, spending time with them whenever possible and generally spoiling them.
She was known for her hearty laugh, not holding back her opinion, and a knack for telling it like it is. Above all, she was known for her kind heart. She was always an enthusiastic hostess who loved to throw a party. You never left her house empty handed – whether it was food, drink, or some random item in her home – she was the most gracious hostess.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Wall (Robert) Hewston of Daphne, Ala.; grandsons, William Robert Hewston and George Wynn Hewston of Daphne, Ala.; her brothers, William W. Wynne Jr. of Daphne, Ala., and Phillip Andrew (Jeanne) Wynne of Mobile, Ala.; her sister-in-law, Nancy Wall (Samuel) Bennett of Tallahassee, Fla.; her nephews, Matthew Wall (Cori) Bennett J.D. of Tallahassee, Fla.; Dr. Travis Andrew (Julie) Bennett of Sylva, N.C.; Dr. Phillip Andrew (Julia) Wynne Jr. of Houston, Texas; her niece, Hallie Wynne (Brandon) Reed of Mobile, Ala.; seven great nephews; one great niece; and countless friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road in Daphne, Ala. and the memorial service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Father Matthew O'Connor officiating. The family will host a lunch following the service at Assumption Hall at Christ the King Catholic Church in Daphne.

Wall Scholarship Fund with donations made out to Alabama Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators – in care of – Stephanie Miller, Central Alabama Community College, 1675 Cherokee Road, Alexander City, AL 35010.
