Hamilton Bowen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hartnett Funeral Home on Aug. 9, 2024.
Hamilton Harcourt Bowen, affectionately known as Hammie passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, just shy of his 91st birthday. Hamilton was born on August 27, 1933, in the parish of St. Michael, Barbados, to his late mother, Mabel Alicine (Elise) Bowen. His love and wisdom will live on through his family. He leaves behind his devoted wife of more than 60 years, Elenese, whom he lovingly called Princess E; sisters: Lucille and Corinne; brother: Winston; children: Elston (and wife, Ella), Michael, Sharon (and husband, Carlos) and Lorraine; grandchildren: Shakir, Khalid (and their father, Johnnie), Chermaine and Natasha; Clarke, Reuben, Laurence and Scarlett (and their mother, Sandra); great grandchildren: Lamar, Jamile and Ezme; and a worldwide network of cherished family and friends. Hamilton was preceded in death by brothers: Harry, Ernest, Oliver, and sister: Monica.
In the 1960s, Hamilton, Elenese, and their son Elston embarked on a new chapter, migrating from Barbados to England. There, they welcomed three more children: Michael, Sharon, and Lorraine. Hamilton worked for the British Rail where he served with pride as a train conductor. In the early 1980's, the family's journey continued across the seas to Long Island, New York. For many years, Hamilton held a pivotal role as a comptroller at Derby Drugs ensuring quality control. His dedication to caring for others led him to pursue a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Long Beach Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Renowned for his meticulous care and unwavering commitment, Hamilton retired in June 2015 at the age of 82 but left an enduring legacy among his colleagues and patients. His final days were spent at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Center, where he received compassionate care from former coworkers. Although saddened that he was a patient, they shared heartwarming stories of their time working with him. Hamilton's family is grateful that the same care he provided to his patients was reciprocated when he was in need at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation.
A devout member of the Freeport United Methodist Church, Hamilton found solace and joy in his faith. His remarkable singing voice was a gift cherished by all. The church was his home away from home and it gave him great joy to serve in any capacity. As a faithful servant of God, Hamilton shared his wisdom and belief with everyone, offering prayers and support to those in need.
Hamilton's vibrant personality extended beyond his faith. His daughter, Lorraine transformed him into a social media sensation, dubbing him the "Original Handsome". Through countless videos and photos, Hamilton captured hearts worldwide. His social media family loved him dearly and some went out of their way just to meet him in person. As an avid cyclist, he would ride his bicycle for miles throughout Long Island until early 2024. He enjoyed gardening and gifting plants and vegetables to family and friends. As a dedicated fan of the soap opera "General Hospital", he and Princess E never missed an episode. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge that amazed all who knew him. He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As Hamilton would say, "Make Hay While the Sun Shines". His final wish was to witness one last sunset, a dream fulfilled in his beloved Barbados in May 2024.
