Harold Joseph Bittner Jr., 73, passed away on November 28, 2024, with his wife Marion by his side. He was born on May 18, 1951, in Pittsburgh to Harold and Helen (Stuart) Bittner.
Harold graduated high school in 1969 from Sewickley Academy in Pittsburgh and graduated from Layfette College in 1974 with a BS in engineering and a BA in mathematics. He went on to work in the steel industry in Pittsburgh for over 40 years. Working in the steel industry is also where he met his wife, Marion. He would ask her to write some of his work because her handwriting was 100 times better.
Harold also was also a passionate sports fan and officiated all his adult life. He officiated basketball, soccer, lacrosse and softball. He could not watch a sporting event either in person, or on TV, without officiating the game. Although he could not ice skate, his favorite sport was hockey. He was a Penguins season ticket holder for 18 years and loved going to games. Harold, along with the Potter family, the Klasnik family, and the Gaul family were an integral part of elevating youth hockey in Pittsburgh in the early 1990's. Many families today are reaping the rewards of the hard work they put in to fight for opportunities for Pittsburgh hockey.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Helen (Stuart) Bittner.
Harold is survived by his wife Marion; his daughters, Megan (Brett) Andrade of Pittsburgh, Jenna (John) Rushin of Douglassville, Pennsylvania, and his son, JB (Katie) Bittner of Powell, Ohio. He was a proud "pap" to eight grandchildren, Gavin Rushin, 15, Aiden Andrade, 14, Grace Rushin, 13, Sydney Bittner, 10, JJ Rushin, 10, Addison Andrade, 9, Benson Bittner, 8, and Cassidy Rushin, 7. Harold is also survived by his brother, Jim Bittner.
Family and friends are welcome on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Beinhauer-Fryer Funeral Home, 430 Washington Avenue, Bridgeville (412-221-3800), where a blessing service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Committal services and burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
