Born on July 4, 1951, to Roy Franklin and Mayola Smart, Harold Ray Franklin lived a life rich in experiences. As a Park Hill native, he spent much of his childhood working his father’s farm and junkyard business often mentioning how he and his dad would climb power lines and haul junk to and from various cities in the Denver Metro Area. He loved hunting and fishing trips with his dad and his brother Del in Rocky Mountain National Park and spending summers in Witchita, KS with his cousins and siblings. A graduate of East High School in 1972, he enjoyed singing baritone in the East High School Chorus alongside Phillip Bailey of the legendary group Earth, Wind and Fire. He was also a star runner leading his track team to a state title.

Life presented Harold with challenges but he never let that stand in the way of pursuing a career in computer science. He earned his degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver. He went on to serve for more than 25 years with the federal government as a computer programmer. He faced the gradual loss of his eyesight with remarkable fortitude, by adapting to the world, even if it meant bringing his guide dog, Moby along for the ride. He taught us all the true meaning of resilience, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, joy and connection are always possible.

Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1998, Harold retired early and enjoyed nurturing his garden, working on his 1976 Ford Bronco and his Chevy Silverado, watching Jeopardy, and attend MS support groups. He loved to groove to 70s soul music, though once in a while he’d sprinkle in some Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Harold’s greatest joy in life was connecting with his family. He loved receiving phone calls from his family near or far, reminiscing about old times, talking about the latest news, or how bad, or good the Broncos or Nuggets were doing. He adored his pets- especially his last dog Jumanji, reveled in wearing the color red, and always stressed the importance of saving money. His favorite number was 8 as it represented H being his first initial and the 8th letter in the alphabet but turned to the side, it was the infinity sign.

Harold departed this earth on the morning of February 8, 2025 at the age of 73. He leaves behind his sons Arnell Franklin and Takeo Franklin as well as his bonus daughter, Deja Sconiers; siblings: Margie (Charles) Finley, Sharon Patterson, Paula Givens, and Karla Hodges, and an abundance of cousins, nieces, and nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Doris Chapman and Royce May Franklin, and brother, Del Roy Franklin.

It is our faith that Harold is at peace and resting in the arms of the Lord. In the last few days of his life, Deja spoke with him and he mentioned he was ready for his party. We will proceed with honoring his wishes for cremation and gather for a memorial luncheon in his honor. We thank you for the love, thoughts and prayers during this time.
