Harold McGee Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 27, 2026.
Harold Earl McGee, 56, was born on April 3, 1969, in Austin to loving parents Karen Kidd McGee and Harold Aten McGee. He grew up surrounded by family and laughter, especially at family gatherings.

Harold graduated from Crockett High School in Austin in 1987 and maintained many of his high school friendships throughout his life. Shortly after graduation, Harold proudly joined the United States Marine Corps. He often said, "Once a Marine, always a Marine," and he carried that pride, discipline, and loyalty with him always.

In February 1991, Harold married his high school sweetheart, Kirsten Bergfeld. Together they welcomed their son, Gavin McGee, in 1998. Although Harold and Kirsten did not remain married, Harold and Gavin shared a close and meaningful bond. They watched every University of Texas football and basketball games together, enjoyed playing golf, and kept a tradition of meeting for lunch before games-talking about life, goals, relationships, and new endeavors. Harold was deeply proud of the man his son became.

Harold continued his education and graduated from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, in December 1994, earning a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences with a major in Applied Arts and Sciences.

Harold was also known for his entrepreneurial spirit. He built a career through real estate, business brokerage, life insurance, and other financial strategies. He valued relationships and community, and he invested time each week networking-contributing to business conversations, building friendships, creating opportunities, and growing an investor network he considered part of his extended family. He was grateful for his colleagues, associates, and business partners, and he took pride in helping others and building something lasting.

About 15 years ago, Harold met Esmeralda Lira in the Austin area, beginning a new chapter filled with love, partnership, and adventure. Harold and Esmeralda married

in December 2017. Together they traveled and made memories that will be cherished forever, including a special trip to Costa Rica where Harold enjoyed seeing the oceans, jungles, monkeys, and iguanas.

Harold's love for family was steady and unmistakable. He treasured time with his mother, father, son, and wife, and he looked forward to the future with joy. He was especially proud to attend Gavin's wedding in January 2026 and give his son away as he married his beautiful bride, Laura Camila Suarez Cortes. Harold also looked forward to the day he would hold grandchildren from Gavin and his stepson, Charles, and he couldn't wait to welcome a new generation into the family.

One of Harold's most meaningful family adventures was a trip to Ireland with Gavin, Esmeralda, and Charles-an experience Harold made possible because he had promised Gavin he would take him. They traveled through the countryside, driving from castle to castle, sightseeing, and learning more about Harold's heritage and ancestry-creating memories that will remain close to their hearts.

Harold is preceded in death by his grandparents Donald and Doris Kidd and Henry and Fairy McGee. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gavin and Camila McGee; his wife, Esmeralda McGee; stepson Charles Knox; parents Harold A. and Karen McGee; sister and brother-in-law, Julie and Rudy Vela; nieces Kaylin and Shay Vela plus many cousins and close friends.
