Harold Shoup Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2024.
Harold (Hal) Shoup, 94, respected and beloved husband, father and grandfather (Pal), passed away peacefully in his home in Herndon, Virginia on July 31, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Hal's younger years were distinguished by his exceptional gift for swimming. In 1952, he graduated from Michigan State University as an All-American backstroker. He then served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

In 1958, Hal married Mary Ann (Brinegar) Shoup. Together, they raised three children, Chris, Leslie and Lisa. They lived in Bay Village, Ohio for 26 years, a time that became a cherished part of their lives.

Hal's career was marked by important achievements. He made a significant impact at Carr Liggett Advertising, starting as a copywriter and working his way up to President of the agency. Committed to regional development, Hal served for many years on the Greater Cleveland Growth Association.

In 1989, Hal and Mary Ann moved to Washington, DC and Hal served as Executive Vice President of the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA), where he collaborated with industry and political leaders on legislative issues until his retirement in 2001.

While in DC, Hal and Mary Ann built a house in Marshall, Virginia, which became a favorite spot for festive gatherings. He taught his grandchildren to swim, and enjoyed working the property on his farm tractor. Hal and Mary Ann travelled extensively after Hal retired, especially to Paris to visit their daughter Leslie and their grandchildren.

Hal had a lifetime love of sports, and golf was his passion. As a fisherman, his pinnacle, at age 85, was hooking and singlehandedly landing a sizable sailfish. He was a faithful fan of the Michigan State Spartans, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Tigers and Lions, and later, the Washington Nationals and Commanders.

Hal is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Ann; his loving children: Chris (Suzie) Shoup, Leslie (Thierry) Schwarzmnan and Lisa (Ed) Stucky; and his adoring grandchildren: Austin (Kaitlin) Shoup, Mary Ellen (Ronnie) Giambalvo, Charlie (Ann) Shoup, Thomas Schwarzmann, Jack (Karén) Stucky, Matthieu Schwarzmann, Julia Stucky, and Louis Schwarzmann. His survivors will mourn his loss and celebrate his life and legacy at the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a favorite family spot.

Hal and I were camp counselors in 1946 and 1947 at Camp Mahn-Go-Tah-See on Loon Lake , Hale, Michigan. I was two years older than Hal and attended UofM; however we kept in touch for a few years. I received my
DDS.,married and moved to Florida. Hal was a very special young man and after all these years remains in my memory bank as one of my most cherished friends. Richard (Dick) Tanner, 185 Towerview Drive, Apt. 2309, St. Augustine,Florida 32092

We were fortunate enough to purchase Hal and MaryAnn´s lovely home in Marshall Virginia in 2012. One of our fondest memories of Hal is when he gave us tractor driving lessons. They both shared beautiful home memories as they transitioned to a smaller living situation. We have changed very little here in Marshall as they left a beautiful home legacy for us to treasure.

I was in love with this man, actually everyone in our Dermatology office was! I had the absolute pleasure in taking part of his care as his Medical Assistant on countless occasions throughout our 9 year courtship! We would see each other every 3-6 months (and sometimes a few visits in between) for the last 9 years.

When he didn't see me in the office, he certainly wanted to know where I was and to tell me he missed me! He asked me almost every time, if I'd been promoted yet! He was a hoot! I will miss him calling and asking me to sneak him in for a quick visit! LOL. He would tell me, "I have this itch on my back". Then I would ask him if he was using the cream we gave him for it. He would say, "Wellllll, Mrs. Shoup is usually asleep and I don't want to wake her". We would just laugh!

He was a lovely human and I will miss him so much. There will never be a patient that I get so excited to see like I did when I saw Mr. Shoup. He was precious!
