Harold Nelson Smith, a dedicated husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away on July 1, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on August 19, 1953, Harold was a passionate artist and a devoted member of his community. He is remembered for his great sense of humor, his warm listening ear, and his constant encouragement to those around him. Harold appreciated life and embraced every moment with enthusiasm.
Harold's education laid the groundwork for a vibrant career in art and communication. He graduated from Bellows Free Academy Fairfax in 1971 before pursuing an associate's degree in commercial art from the Art Institute of Atlanta in 1977. His professional journey included significant roles as a paste-up artist at George Little Press in Burlington, Vermont, where he worked diligently for 17 years. He then served as an information officer for INS for 16 years, sharing his talents with a broader audience.
A proud veteran, Harold served in the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1975. His service instilled in him a profound appreciation for life and duty, shaping not just his character but also his outlook on the world.
In addition to his professional and military accomplishments, Harold was deeply engaged with the arts in his community, notably contributing to local theater. He was instrumental in building and painting sets, as well as taking on acting roles that showcased his artistic versatility. Harold was also immensely proud of having built his own house alongside his family, a testament to his dedication and craftsmanship.
Harold’s interests were as diverse as his talents. He enjoyed fishing, attending Renaissance Fairs, and savoring hotdogs and beef sticks. His love for life was matched only by his unwavering faith in God, which was a cornerstone of his life.
Harold is survived by his beloved wife, Alisa Smith, and their two daughters, Amber Jeanne Winiarski and her husband Steven, and Jenifer Leigh Barnes and her husband Dean. He cherished his grandchildren, Colby, Parker, and Tate Winiarski, and Hunter, Risland, and Indigo Griffin-Barnes, who brought him great joy.
He is also remembered by his brother, Rick and Robin Smith, and his sister, Tamia Gastio, along with many additional family members including John Kuhn, Kirk and Karen Israel, Kathleen and Shawn Drew, and Fred and Julie Kuhn. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Nelson and Jeanne Marie Smith, whose love and guidance influenced him throughout his life.
As we remember Harold Nelson Smith, we celebrate a life that was rich in love, laughter, and artistry. His legacy will continue in the hearts of all who knew him, reminding us to appreciate the beauty in life and nature and to uplift one another with kindness and encouragement.
