Harriet Lavon Brown was born on June 15, 1932, in Emmet County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Reinhardt. Harriet attended school in Dolliver, Iowa.

On November 6, 1949, Harriet was united in marriage to James Brown in Blue Earth, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Mankato for a short time before moving to Windom, Minnesota. Harriet and Jim then returned to the Gruver area before moving to Beloit, Wisconsin, for 14 years and back to Gruver in 1967, where they continued to farm. The couple then moved to the Fairmont and Estherville area to run the Way Out Western store in Fairmont for several years before retiring. Harriet and Jim shared over sixty-eight years together before Jim passed away on July 31, 2018.

When Harriet was not busy assisting Jim at the western store, she cared for their home and enjoyed spending her free time with her grandchildren, tending to her garden, reading, and playing card games. Harriet loved to watch basketball and cheering on the Minnesota Vikings.
