Loving husband, father, Poppa, brother, uncle, and friend, Harry Albert Barrows, age 88, of
Athens, Texas, went to be with Jesus peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Friday, January 23, 2026.
Harry was born on March 29, 1937, in
Sayre, Pennsylvania, to Leon and Marjorie Barrows. He was gentle and kind, known for his sweet smile, and truly never met a stranger. The legacy he leaves behind is one of impeccable work ethic, dedication, and grit.
Harry loved traveling, motorcycles, race cars, old classic car shows, "stump jumpin," cooking, and trips to Oklahoma with his family. Everyone who knew Harry had no doubt that he loved his country-it was evident in his strong opinions and the pride with which he wore his patriotic T-shirts.
He accepted Christ as his Savior many years ago and was a proud member of Central Baptist Church in
Athens, Texas.
Harry loved his family deeply and was devoted to making sure everyone knew they mattered to him. He often shared that even though his beloved wife was gone, his love for her never faded.
Harry graduated from Burbank High School while working at a woodworking shop making totem poles and wooden dishes. In 1960, he joined the United States Army, serving three years in the Transportation Department. He was entrusted with transporting high-ranking officers and Army generals. During a portion of his Army career, he was stationed in Germany, and he often shared great stories and fond memories of his time there.
In 1963, Harry began his career with Redman Mobile Homes in Monrovia, California, later transferring to their
Athens, Texas location as Production Manager until 1977. In 1977, he was asked to manage the Cabinet and Finish Work Department for Curtis Mathes in
Athens, Texas, where he worked until the company closed in 1991. Throughout his career, Harry formed many long-standing friendships that meant so much to him.
At the age of 65, Harry came out of retirement to work for West Tennessee Expediting, hauling heavy equipment parts from Kilgore to San Antonio. He remained a loyal and dependable employee until retiring at the age of 85.
Harry was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Rose Allbright Barrows; his parents, Leon and Marjorie Barrows; stepfather Cliff Hendrickson; sister Elsie Antonson; brothers Skeeter Barrows and Bill Varney; nephew Bobby Antonson; granddaughters Kelsie Watson and Austin Allen; and great-granddaughter Shylee Barrows.
He leaves behind his daughter Terrie Crawford and husband Delbert; sons Tommy Barrows Sr., Timmy Barrows and wife Marli, and John Johnson; and daughter Kerri Gardner and husband Larry. He is also survived by grandchildren Ronny Crawford and wife Sherry, Brandie Herron and husband Matt, Chadd Barrows, Cassie Woods and husband Geoff, Tommy Lee Barrows, Tracy Barrows, Anthony Barrows and wife Kristina, Katherine Loper and husband Bryan, Kourtney McEvoy and husband Dustin, Brittany Barrows, Harley Gunter, Dillion Barrows, and Kolton Gardner; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nephew Michael Antonson; lifelong friend Benny Lentz; and numerous extended family members and friends.
Being a Poppa brought Harry his greatest joy. His love for his family shined brightly in everything he did. He will be deeply missed, and the sweet memories shared with him will be treasured forever.
The family extends a special thank you to the wonderful nurses and caregivers of Cedar Lake Hospice for the love and compassion they provided.
