Harry Cavenaugh Obituary
Harry Russell Cavenaugh
Dec 11, 1946 - Feb 5, 2026
Harry Russell "Russ" Cavenaugh, of Kernersville, N.C., passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026. He was 79 years old.
Born on December 11, 1946, in Wallace, N.C., Russ was the beloved son of Hazel and Willie Cavenaugh. He grew up with a deep sense of faith and service that would guide him throughout his life. He proudly served his country for six years in the United States Navy, where he found great joy in being aboard ship-an experience he cherished and often spoke of with fondness.
Russ was a man whose life was rooted in devotion-to his faith, to his family, and to the values he held dear. A man of prayer, he sought the Lord daily and spent countless hours reading his Bible. His favorite verse from Isaiah 40:31 reflected the strength and endurance that defined his character:
"But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint."
His love for his wife, Ruth Cavenaugh, who preceded him in death, was all-consuming. Their bond was one of deep affection and unwavering commitment. Together they built a life centered around faith and family. Russ's heart overflowed with love for his grandchildren-Autumn Mecham (Diego), Jonathan Craven (Ashley), and Ada Knouse-whom he adored fiercely.
He is survived by his devoted daughter, Charlotte Shelton, and her husband, Michael Shelton. Their care and presence brought comfort to Russ in his later years.
Russ found joy in simple pleasures-he loved going to church and sharing meals out with loved ones. These moments were opportunities for fellowship and connection that meant the world to him.
In addition to his wife Ruth, Russ was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Willie Cavenaugh, and an infant brother.
May Harry Russell "Russ" Cavenaugh's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting testament to a life lived with faith, love, and devotion. A funeral will be held on February 15, 2026, at 4 p.m. at Friedland Moravian Church, 2750 Friedland Church Rd. Visitation/Viewing to start at 3 p.m.
