With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Kanaratonoron Harry Michael "Mike" Jock, Bear Clan, of Akwesasne, who left us on February 12, 2025, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. Mike was born on August 23, 1953, to the late Edgar and Ann (Chubb) Jock. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, whose life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, community, and culture.
Mike was a respected traditional knowledge keeper, with a deep understanding of and commitment to preserving The Great Law. He shared his wisdom with those around him, ensuring that the teachings of his ancestors continued to thrive. Mike's passion for his heritage was matched by his accomplishments in his career. He attended St. Lawrence College, where he trained in welding and ironwork, eventually becoming a valued ironworker for Local 440. He contributed to the skylines across Indian Country and served as a foreman on numerous construction projects. Mike also worked as a carpenter for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, where he had a significant impact on local infrastructure. His work on projects like the 9 Mile Power Plant in New Hampshire and the Power Plant in Oswego, NY, stands as a testament to his skill and dedication.
As a tribal employee and a member of the American Legion, Mike also served his community in many other capacities. He was a university lecturer, sharing his knowledge of The Great Law with students. Mike was one of the creative minds behind Akwesasne Notes, an important publication in the Mohawk community. A sociable man with a love for life, Mike was an avid golfer, a passionate collector, and a frequent auction-goer with his daughter & siblings. He also enjoyed spending time traveling with his best friend Tehoronio through the mountains, in the kitchen and had a deep love for animals. Mike continued the tradition of growing heirloom grapes and crafting wine, and he was a gifted storyteller who enjoyed sharing the stories of his people. His doors were always open to anyone in need of a safe place, offering shelter, support, and kindness to all who sought it. Above all, he cared deeply for his elders and was a constant source of support for them.
"Mike Jock and his family were a key part of the birth and growth of the Indigenous rights movement across the hemisphere. The Jocks were there when Akwesasne Notes began in December, 1969 and for years they took part in the production and distribution of the most important journal in Native history. Mike was part of the touring group "The White Roots of Peace" which carried the message of Native unity through sovereignty. The group sparked a fire wherever they went: Native communities, urban centers, prisons, schools. They restored Native pride and led to a cultural revival at Akwesasne as well. Mike worked with his parents the late Ann and Edgar Jock to create the Indian Way School which became the inspiration for the Akwesasne Freedom School and all the good things which flowed from that time. He carried himself with dignity as a Mohawk wherever he went. He was a vital part of the generation which stood in defense of the Nation's ancestral values and principles. Through Mike the lands, identity and rights of all Kaienkehaka were preserved for all time." - Doug George-Kanentiio
