Harry Melvin Milner, 92, of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, at Life Care Center of Valparaiso, surrounded by the love of his family and knowing he was going home to reunite with his parents and brother.
Born on September 29, 1932, in Granville, Missouri, to Harry and Mabel Milner, Harry spent his early years rooted in the values of hard work, family, and community. He was a proud graduate of Shelbina High School, Class of 1951, where he played on the football team and was an active member of the FFA.
Shortly after graduating, Harry enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Georgia. While serving his country, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Jean Slocum. Together, they welcomed their first two children, Connie Jean and Terry Melvin, while stationed in Savannah.
Following his honorable service in the Air Force, Harry fulfilled his lifelong dream of working with livestock trucks and eventually moved his family to Gary, Indiana in 1964. There, he built a successful 30-year career as a driver with Yellow Freight System, retiring in 1995.
Harry was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who took great pride in his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 70 years, Marilyn Jean Milner; his children Connie (Ron) Dennison, Terry (Kim) Milner, Ronnie (Alice) Milner and Chris Williamson. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
In his retirement, Harry found great happiness traveling-especially attending car races and exploring the western United States. He was a man of strength, loyalty, and quiet determination, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and hard work.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mabel Milner, and his brother, Audrey Milner.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Legion, in honor of Harry's service and lifelong dedication to his country.
