Harry Payne Obituary

Harry Hugh Payne passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 91 years old.

He was preceded in death by his two oldest children, Lori Grisham and Curtis Payne. He is survived by his devoted wife, Lorraine, and his four children: Trecia Martinez (Stefan), Bryan Payne, Nicole McGhan (Logan), and Ashley Bunker (Bryce). Harry was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Harry was born on May 16, 1934, at Dana Maternity Home in Mesa, Arizona. Shortly after, he was adopted by H. Thurber and Lyn Dana Payne and grew up alongside his sister, Linda Howard. After graduating from Mesa High School in 1952, he attended Brigham Young University for one year.

He later moved to California, where he married his first wife and welcomed two children. During this time, he also pursued his love of baseball, spending time as a semi-pro player with the Baltimore Orioles. Returning to Arizona, he married his second wife and had two more children. Ultimately, Harry found the love of his life, Lorraine, with whom he welcomed his last two children.

Whether coaching, playing, or watching, Harry loved all things related to baseball. He was equally proud when bragging about his wicked curveball, his reliable glove at third base, or his epic arguments with umpires. His passion for the game carried on as he spent many years coaching his two youngest daughters in softball.

After a long career as an Allstate Insurance Agent, Harry retired and devoted more time to golf, another of his passions. Whether playing a round or watching the pros, he loved the game. Even in his final months, he dreamed of getting back on the course to achieve his fourth hole-in-one.

Beyond sports, Harry cherished time with his family. He enjoyed relaxing at the beach, visiting Disneyland, and supporting his children and grandchildren in all their activities. He was rarely without a Coke in hand, a pocket full of candy for his grandkids, or a wallet overflowing with photos to proudly share.

Harry also had a deep appreciation for vintage cars, classic John Wayne westerns, and the companionship of his dogs. He will be remembered for his humor, his endless sports stories, and his stubborn yet endearing spirit.

Funeral services for Harry Hugh Payne will be held on Saturday, October 11, at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1010 S. Recker Road in Gilbert. Family and friends are welcome to gather for a short visitation beginning one hour before the service. There will also be a public visitation on Friday, October 10, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Gilbert Memorial Park, 2100 E. Queen Creek Road in Gilbert.
