Harry Allen Rowe passed away peacefully at the age of 79 at Centura Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO on Sunday, October 16, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 2, 1943 to Vera (Darby) and Buford Allen Rowe in Bend, Oregon. He was the youngest child of three: Jerry Rowe and Barbara (Rowe) McGee. Five generations of Rowe boys have the middle name of Allen.
He grew up in Lamar, Colorado at the time of hot muscle cars dragging Main Street. He attended Lamar HS and graduated a Savage from LHS, class of '61. He had a candy apple red '57 Chevy that he loved. He also had a good friend, Terry Leonard, who let him drive his navy blue '61 hardtop Corvette Stingray.
Harry attended Lamar Junior College and that is where he met the love of his life, Hellen Ochoa. After a short courtship, they wed on December 22, 1963 at Lamar Methodist Church. After marriage, they lived in Lamar and Harry worked at Creigh's Packing Plant. Harry and Hellen moved to Walsh, Hellen's hometown, where he worked for his father-in-law, Tony. After that, they moved to Gunnison, CO where they both attended Western State University and worked for his second family, the Hollenbecks. They returned to Walsh to start raising his family. He was on the town council and was instrumental in the process of securing Walsh Swimming Pool.
Harry was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, trapping, fishing and camping. He shared that love with his family. Some of the fondest family memories are hauling a little pop-up camper up to Estes Park and camping at Shadow Mountain Reservoir Campground. Many Kokanee Salmon were hauled up over the dam wall at the reservoir.
He worked in agriculture all his life. He raised crops, drove tractor, changed water and harvested. Harry worked for many years for Melvin Konkel. For a short time the Konkel's had a hog farm west of Vilas. This is where The Three Little Pig's company began. Hogs were processed at Jensen's Blue Ribbon Processing in Fowler, Colorado. Harry drove a refrigerated truck around selling the pork products in southeast Colorado. Harry eventually began working at the Temple & Esgar Grain Elevator in Vilas. The elevator sold to Cargill, Inc., then back to Temple Grain. The rest of his working years were spent at Temple. He "retired" then returned to work keeping busy at Custom Applications for Steve Cogburn, hired hand for Hellen's Mowing Service, Walsh School District and the Town of Walsh working on the pool and mowing.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 59 years, Hellen; children Jeff and fiancé Michelle Dos Santos of Walsh; Shaleen and husband Russell Bates of Fowler, CO; and Mike and wife Traci of Parker, CO; grandchildren Kayla, Logan, Brennan, Braxton and Willow, and two great-grandchildren, Ember and Elana, and many nieces and nephews. Surviving sibling is Barbara McGee of Lamar, CO.
Harry and Hellen recently attended Harry's class reunion in Lamar and enjoyed a time of reminiscing with friends and classmates. He was able to catch up with a life-long friend, Gary Armitage.
