Harvey Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home on Mar. 8, 2025.
Monticello, NY
With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved father, Harvey Michael Smith, who left us on March 7, 2025, at the age of 81. Harvey was born on February 25, 1944, in Baltimore, MD, to Irving and Martha Smith.
A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, Harvey grew up in Parksville and graduated from Liberty High School. He was a man of many passions-his family, architecture, physics, music, and philosophy. Above all, he cherished his family, and they loved him with all their hearts. Harvey's 57-year marriage to his beloved wife, Stephanie, was a testament to love and devotion. Their love story, which began at the Raleigh Hotel in their youth, was a true Catskill romance. Harvey, a handsome waiter, was instantly captivated by a beautiful hostess at the coffee shop, and from that moment on, they were inseparable.
Harvey proudly served in the U.S. Army and enjoyed a fulfilling career, including his time as Village Manager of Monticello and Commissioner of General Services for Sullivan County. His contributions were many, but his impact on the people who knew him was immeasurable.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jason Pantel, and his son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Amie Smith. He leaves behind his four grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and pride-Gabrielle Pantel, Madeline Pantel, Emma Smith, and Ethan Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Jeff Smith, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sheila and John Gatto.
Harvey was predeceased by his beloved wife, Stephanie Smith, and his brother, Richard Smith.
Every day, Harvey amazed us with his brilliance, and he will forever remain in our hearts. His love, wisdom, and kindness will continue to guide us always.
Services will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are honorably entrusted to the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home - 845-794-7474 or www.josephngarlickfuneralhome.com.
